Student answer (Band 6.0)

Rapid urbanization has increased the demand of housing so it is widely argued that tall apartment blocks should be constructed to provide adequate housing in mega cities. Although it will help to cope with the high demand for housing, I disagree with this claim that high rise apartments should be built to resolve this issue because it can be inconvenient for residents as well as will increase energy consumption.

When there are several high rise buildings in urban centers, people may face several issues reaching to their apartments, especially due to a large number of stairs. The current lifestyle of mostly people has made them physically inactive. They may lose their breath midway. As a result, this approach can prove inconvenient for residents. For example, people who are elderly or sick they may find it difficult to get out of their apartment and visit a hospital.

Additionally, when there is a tall building with several apartments, it may require more energy. There will be many apartments so more energy will be required for air conditoning, elevators and water pumps. Consequently, it may strain overall available energy resources of the city. For instance, energy consumption of a fifteen storey building may be considerably higher than a double-storey building because electricity will be used by almost everyone living there. It may result in a new major issue in the city.

In conclusion, building of tall apartment blocks may slove the rising problem of housing in urban areas, but I believe it can cause inconvenience to the residents and strain energy resources.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position throughout the essay. The student states their disagreement with the idea of building tall apartment blocks, supporting this position with two main arguments: inconvenience for residents and increased energy consumption. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as elderly people visiting hospitals and the energy demands of a fifteen-storey building compared to a double-storey building. However, the first body paragraph contains a slightly weak and unusual argument regarding stairs in high-rise buildings (ignoring the standard presence of elevators). Nonetheless, the overall position is clear, and the task requirements are properly met, corresponding to a Band 6.5 or 7.0 descriptor level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall progression with a discernible introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Although', 'When', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion'. However, some of the referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the logical flow could be smoother. For instance, the transition from urbanization to the specific physical challenge of stairs is somewhat abrupt. Overall, the structural arrangement demonstrates clear logical organization, aligning well with the Band 6.5 to 7.0 criteria.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'Rapid urbanization', 'inconvenient', 'energy consumption', and 'strain overall available energy resources'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but also noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'demand of housing' instead of 'demand for housing', 'mostly people' instead of 'most people', and 'slove' in the conclusion. While these minor errors exist, they do not impede communication. The lexical range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional and transitional structures like 'Although it will help to cope...' and 'when there is a tall building...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, such as 'people who are elderly or sick they may find it difficult' (redundant pronoun) and 'reach to their apartments' (unnecessary preposition). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though occasional comma splices occur. The errors do not impede communication and allow the reader to follow the arguments, which places this performance firmly in the Band 6.0 category.
