Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, housing concern has became increasingly popular in urban areas due to population growth and urbanisation. some individuals argues that building multi stories building is the best approach to provide enough homes. I largely agree with this view because high-rise building can accommodate more people in limited space, although other solution are also necessary.

One major advantage of building tall apartment blocks is that they make efficient use of land. In large cities, available land is expensive and limited, making it difficult to construct individual homes for everyone. By building upward, developers can provide homes to hundreds of families on a relatively small area of land. This approach can help reduce shortages and limit the expansion of cities into surrounding agriculture areas. For example, in cities like Mumbai and Gurgaon, high rise residential allows large number of people to live relatively close to workplace, schools and public transport.

Another benefit is that apartment blocks support modern urban infrastructure. It is easier for government to provide water. electricity and public transport for individuals more effectively. Furthermore, apartments maybe be more affordable for first time home buyer, young individuals and low-wage income families compared with buying an individual house in large cities.

However, i do not believe that tall apartment blocks alone can solve the housing problem. Poorly planned high-rise developments may lead to overcrowding in the area and result in traffic congestion and pressure on public services. Moreover, some familied prefer to live in a independent space with garden and backyard. Hence, government should plan the city appropriately by controlling prices and providing services in suburbs.

To conclude, building high-rise building is a smart approach to deal with housing crises in urban areas. However, providing public services like effective public transportation and schooling in suburb can also contribute in providing enough homes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear and well-supported position agreeing that tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide housing, while acknowledging counter-arguments. Your ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as mentioning Mumbai and Gurgaon. The discussion covers land efficiency, infrastructure, affordability, and the drawbacks of high-rises like traffic and overcrowding. Although some points could be explored in even greater depth to push into the higher bands, the overall fulfillment of the prompt is strong and clearly satisfies the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently structured, starting with a well-defined introduction, followed by distinct body paragraphs discussing advantages and disadvantages, and ending with a concise conclusion. You make use of various cohesive devices such as 'One major advantage', 'Furthermore', and 'However' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, even though occasional mechanical transitions appear. Cohesion is managed well overall, placing this response solidly in the Band 7 range.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some flexibility and precision with terms like 'urbanisation', 'infrastructure', and 'overcrowding'. There are, however, noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'housing concern has became', 'multi stories building', 'agriculture areas', and 'low-wage income families'. While you attempt less common items, these minor inaccuracies in word choice and morphology prevent the response from achieving a higher band. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is adequate to convey your meaning clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct subordinate clauses and conditional structures. However, there are several persistent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('some individuals argues', 'high rise residential allows'), capitalization errors ('i', 'government'), and tense inconsistencies ('has became'). Punctuation slips, such as missing commas after introductory phrases, are also present. These errors occasionally disrupt the flow, placing your performance at a Band 6 level where control over grammar is somewhat mixed.
