Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages of houses and the necessity of tall apartment blocks, ultimately taking a clear position. However, there are significant issues regarding task fulfilment. Firstly, the response is incomplete, cutting off abruptly in the conclusion ('as they accommoda...'). Secondly, the response falls short of the word count requirement, sitting at 249 words, which is one word below the 250-word minimum. This results in a penalty to the Task Achievement score, as the development is truncated and the task requirements are not fully satisfied. While some ideas regarding land use and facilities are presented, the under-length nature and incomplete conclusion limit the score to a 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay demonstrates some organisation with discernible paragraphs tackling different sides of the argument. However, the overall progression is hampered by abrupt shifts and repetitive phrasing. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or mechanical, such as the repeated use of 'Furthermore' and 'In this way'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph is incomplete, breaking off mid-sentence. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in confusing transitions between sentences about houses and apartments. Overall, the structural flaws and mechanical cohesion place this response firmly at Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses a limited range of vocabulary with noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text. Examples of misspellings and lexical inaccuracies include 'accomodate', 'effciently', 'atmlosphare', 'habbits', 'relaxcation', 'avoide', 'alsi', 'apatment', and 'malla'. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'dramatically' and 'convenient', the high frequency of basic spelling mistakes ('habbits', 'avoide') and awkward collocations ('criminal activities' instead of 'crime') strain the reader's comprehension. This vocabulary profile aligns with the Band 5.0 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak, with frequent errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. There are numerous punctuation and capitalization errors, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters ('houses remain...', 'i agree...'). Grammatical errors include tense inconsistencies and awkward phrasing, such as 'if certain families will live in houses, they would prvide good atmosphare', 'houses remain suitable for families offer many others oppertunaties', and 'Due to over population authorities should want to build new apatment buildings.' Simple sentences are generally controlled, but complex structures often contain errors. These issues warrant a Band 5.0.
