IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The most suitable way to provide enough homes in large urban cities is to construct tall apartments. I agree to this statement as the residents of large cities need well established public areas, parks, entertainment hubs and markets.

Due to the increasing population around the globe, it is highly unlikely for any city not to face space contraints over the time. This works on a golden rule "More people, More need". If the homes are built separately for each family, most part of city will become residential and none of the area will be available for parks and markets. On the contrary, if tall buildings are built which can cater around 40 families approximately, huge area will be subjected to availability for construction of public facilities like parks, cinemas, walking tracks and markets etc.

Furthermore, it is evident from the growing trend of population, that more people will need more food, basic necessities, hospitals etc. For instance, the most congested city in the world is Mumbai. It, not only possesses large population but also lacks the basic infrastructure for the residents. Due to more residential area dedicated to rich families, the roads are not wides, there are no enough hospitals, markets and essential infrastructure. It results in busy roads, noise pollution, effect on general well-being of residents and overall lifestyle of the people.

Conclusively, it is more appropriate to build tall apartment blocks rather than providing homes to individual families in large cities. It assists the general well-being of residents, provides substantial area for public properties and accordingly affect the lifestyle.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, agreeing with the statement that building tall apartment blocks is the best way to provide homes in large cities. The ideas are extended and supported, particularly in the second paragraph where you contrast individual family homes with high-rise living to preserve public spaces like parks and markets. However, the development in the third paragraph regarding Mumbai feels slightly anecdotal and could be supported with more precise economic or sociological backing. Overall, your main arguments regarding land scarcity and urban planning are relevant and well-formulated, aligning closely with a Band 7 performance where all parts of the prompt are addressed with a clear stance and extended ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

There is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the essay. The response opens with a direct thesis statement in the introduction, followed by distinct body paragraphs that explore land constraints and urban infrastructure issues respectively. You use appropriate cohesive devices to signal transitions, such as 'Furthermore' and 'On the contrary'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and logically, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct sub-topic. However, minor mechanical phrasing in transitions or referencing (such as 'It works on a golden rule') occasionally reveals a slightly formulaic structure, which keeps this criterion at a Band 7 rather than moving into higher bands where cohesion feels entirely natural and unobtrusive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for flexibility and precision, employing less common lexical items such as 'urban cities', 'space constraints', 'infrastructure', and 'well-being'. There is a clear attempt to discuss sophisticated urban planning concepts. However, there are a few noticeable word-choice errors and awkward collocations that prevent a higher score, such as 'space contraints' (spelling slip), 'none of the area will be available' (unnatural phrasing), and 'the roads are not wides' (grammatical and lexical slip). Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the message clearly, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures ('If the homes are built separately...') and relative clauses successfully. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text. For example, 'I agree to this statement' should typically be 'I agree with this statement', 'contraints' contains a spelling error, 'over the time' should be 'over time', and 'the roads are not wides' contains a plural adjective error. Furthermore, phrasing like 'affect the lifestyle' is slightly imprecise. While these errors do not impede communication, they recur frequently enough to prevent the attainment of a Band 7, placing your grammatical control firmly at Band 6.
