Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student introduces a clear perspective on the housing crisis and the rise of tall apartment blocks. However, the response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, stopping abruptly at only 190 words. Consequently, the ideas presented in the introduction and second paragraph are not fully developed or extended, as required for higher bands. While the writer attempts to address the prompt by highlighting economic efficiency, services, and community benefits, the lack of a concluding paragraph and the underdeveloped body arguments prevent the response from achieving a higher score. Under the official descriptors, this limitation in development corresponds to a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a basic structural framework with clear paragraphing separating the introduction and the first body paragraph. Ideas are generally organized, and transitions like 'Moreover' and 'Thus' are used to connect thoughts, although some cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is mostly clear, such as 'such societies' referring back to tall apartment blocks. However, because the essay is incomplete and lacks a conclusion, the overall progression is truncated. Paragraphing is handled sufficiently for the text that is present, but logical progression suffers due to the sudden termination of the essay. This performance aligns well with a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range suitable for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'capitalism', 'affordability', and 'socioeconomic' contexts. However, there are notable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'capatalism' instead of 'capitalism', 'a a open land' (grammatical slip as well as lexical), 'maintainance' instead of 'maintenance', and 'socitey' instead of 'society'. The misuse of 'effect contribution' instead of 'effective contribution' further restricts the lexical score. Despite these errors, meaning is generally conveyed, and the vocabulary is sufficient for an adequate range, placing the response at a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some structural ambition with clauses like 'Investing in a open land has become a huge challenge for major chunk of people living in urban areas.' However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, such as missing articles ('Investing in a open land', 'dedicated society managers for its maintainance'), incorrect prepositions ('live at' instead of 'live in'), and spelling/word formation issues. Complex sentence attempts frequently contain minor errors or awkward phrasing, though these errors rarely completely impede communication. This balance of mixed structures and frequent minor errors corresponds to a Band 5.5.
