Student answer (Band 6.5)
The rapid growth of urban population has created an increasing demand for housing in major cities. Some people argue that constructing tall apartment blocks is the best way to provide sufficient homes. I strongly agree with this view, although I believe that high-rise buildings should be developed alongside other forms of housing and adequate public facilities.
One major advantage of tall apartment blocks is that they make efficient use of limited urban land. In densely populated cities, land is often extremely expensive, and contructing houses with large gardens would require considerably more space.By building upwards, thousands of people can accomadate. Moreover these buildings can be located near to workplaces, schools and public transport. Addition to this if these apartments are well planed than it can allow people to share places like gym, playground, garden area, pool, shops etc, which can make resisdents daily life more convenient. For instance, cities such as Singapore, Gurgaon, Bombay have extensively developed high rise building apartments for residential purposes.
However, simply contructing these buildings does not gaurantee to solve problems. If apartment blocks built too densely without sufficient roads, schools, hospitals and recreational areas, they can put considerable pressure on exixting infrastructure. Moreover, some families prefer houses with private gardens. Therefore, suburban housing and the development of smaller residential communities can also play an important role in meeting housing demand.
In conclusion, I believe that building tall apartment blocks is an effective way of providing homes in large cities because it maximises the use of scarce land and can support efficient urban planning.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position throughout the response. The introduction clearly states agreement with the statement while introducing a nuanced view regarding supporting infrastructure. Ideas are well-extended and supported with relevant examples, such as mentioning Singapore, Gurgaon, and Bombay, as well as highlighting the practical benefits of high-rise living like efficient land use and shared facilities. Although the body paragraphs could delve slightly deeper into the counter-arguments, the main arguments are well-developed and directly answer the prompt. The response maintains a consistent focus on the topic from the beginning to the end, fully meeting the requirements for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is appropriately divided into four distinct paragraphs: an introduction, two body paragraphs representing different aspects of the argument, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect ideas, such as 'One major advantage', 'Moreover', and 'However'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and logically. However, there are minor cohesive slips or missing transitional links in places, such as 'Addition to this if these apartments are well planed than it can allow', where cohesion becomes slightly mechanical. Overall, the flow of ideas is coherent and easy to follow, justifying a solid score in this category.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common lexical items such as 'densely populated', 'infrastructure', and 'recreational areas'. However, there are several noticeable spelling errors ('contructing', 'accomadate', 'planed', 'resisdents', 'gaurantee', 'exixting') and occasional word-choice issues. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling mistakes prevent the response from achieving a higher band, although they rarely impede communication. The use of phrases like 'efficient use of limited urban land' shows a good awareness of topic-specific collocation, balancing out the lower-level typographical errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures and relative clauses (e.g., 'If apartment blocks built too densely without sufficient roads...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, notably missing auxiliary verbs and preposition errors (e.g., 'If apartment blocks [are] built', 'Addition to this', 'near to workplaces'). Punctuation is also occasionally weak, with missing spaces after commas and periods. Despite these errors, the sentence structures are sufficiently varied, and meaning is generally clear, allowing the reader to follow the arguments without significant difficulty.
