Student answer (Band 5.0)

Building tall apartment blocks is the best way to provide sufficient houses in big cities. Inorder to provide enough homes this is an effective way to an extent as it can become crowded as well as be a victim of poor living.

Now a days larger cities are focusing on buliding tall apartment blocks so that the increasing population in the cities have enough homes. Moreover the government is rapidly making tall apartment block because most of the people cannnot afford proper houses to live in. However this is causing over population and many apartment bulidings are in poor conditions beacuse of lack of resources. Additionally people are rapidly moving from rural areas to big cities to settle so they buy apartments that are available.

People living in bhakar moving to lahore for a better life usually settle in apartment blocks because they cannot afford a house. Furthermore the cities become very crowded resulting in poor living conditions.

Apartment blocks do provide homes to alot but excessive apartment blocks in a city promotes poor living which results into awful city conditions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the extent to which tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide housing, touching upon both benefits and drawbacks like overcrowding and poor living conditions. However, the task achievement is severely impacted by the word count failure. The essay contains only 181 words, falling well short of the 250-word minimum requirement. Consequently, the ideas are underdeveloped and lack sufficient explanation and specific examples. While a basic position is presented, it is not fully supported or extended throughout the essay. This places the response firmly within the Band 5 category for task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays some overall organization, attempting an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. However, the paragraphing is irregular, and there is a lack of clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'moreover' and 'furthermore'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the links between sentences do not always create a smooth flow of ideas. For example, jumping suddenly into a specific local example regarding 'bhakar moving to lahore' without proper contextualization disrupts the logical progression. This level of organization reflects the Band 5 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including words such as 'overpopulation', 'resources', and 'accommodation' (implied). There are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, such as 'Inorder', 'buliding', 'cannnot', 'beacuse', and 'alot'. These errors reflect a lack of control over basic orthography and collocation. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the general argument, the frequent errors and restricted range mean it cannot achieve a higher band, fitting comfortably at Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple and awkwardly constructed complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as article omission and incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'the government is rapidly making tall apartment block'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, and the frequency of errors is high throughout the short text. Because simple sentences tend to be accurate while complex attempts contain frequent errors, the grammar aligns with the Band 5 descriptor.
