Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, we can see that overpopulation is growing in large cities, and as a result has occurred the problem of people not finding places to live. Many argue that the best way to provide enough homes for everyone is to build tall apartment blocks. In my opinion, I fully agree with this statement for some reasons.

Firt of all, building tall apartment blocks means higher chances for people to find a place to live. Also with the rise of globalization, many large cities become tourist destinations, which means that more spaces are occupied during specific seasons. For example, my hometown has become very popular among tourists, and this is why a lot of apartments are in the procces of building to add more living spaces. In this way large cities can accomodate its citizens and foreigners accordingly.

In addition, this can be a more efficient and time-consuming way to find people places to live. For instance, developing houses everywhere can take a lot of space compared to tall apartments, which are more compact and can even have underground parking for the residents with cars. This leads to more area being developed for apartment complexes, creating a harmonious community.

On the other side, some may disagree because the prices for these places can become higher if demand increases. The higher the demand, the higher the prices of homes in apartments, which means not all people can afford.

To conclude, I think that building tall apartment blocks is a good and efficient way to add living spaces and make sure large cities accomodate everyone. Governments need to make sure that these living spaces can be afforded by most of the population and owners to not abuse their apartments for money.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by stating a clear position ('I fully agree with this statement') and supporting it with relevant ideas such as accommodating population growth and tourism, as well as space efficiency. The main body paragraphs develop these ideas, and a counterargument is briefly considered before being addressed in the conclusion. However, some arguments remain slightly basic and under-developed, such as the generalisation about tourism and apartment buildings. The response would benefit from further elaboration on why tall blocks specifically are the superior solution compared to other urban planning strategies. Overall, the performance aligns with the requirements for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as the benefits of tall blocks versus potential counterarguments. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'Firt of all', 'Also', 'In addition', and 'On the other side'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive, and there are minor structural issues with paragraph transitions. The logical progression is clear enough to guide the reader effortlessly through the argument, justifying a score of 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, incorporating terms such as 'overpopulation', 'globalization', 'tourist destinations', and 'apartment complexes'. There are, however, noticeable word choice and collocation slips, such as 'procces of building' instead of 'process of being built', and phrasing like 'time-consuming way' which seems misused since the student likely meant 'time-saving' or 'efficient'. Spelling errors like 'Firt' and 'accomodate' also appear. Despite these limitations, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, placing this response firmly in the Band 6.0 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, such as 'as a result has occurred the problem of', 'apartments are in the procces of building', and 'to find people places to live'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while the errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication. The control over simple structures is good, but complex structures frequently contain minor inaccuracies. This profile corresponds to a Band 6.0.
