Student answer (Band 6.0)
In the modern era, the best way to make enough homes in large cities is to construct high rise buildings. High rise buildings are so common all over India. Therefore, people nowadays prefer staying in apartments rather than individual houses.
On one hand, some people prefer staying in apartments because luxury flats provide a variety of amenities. Additionally apartments offer security and safety. They believe high rise buildings provide breathtaking views which can make living more memorable and it is cheaper than individual homes
For instance, one of my friends who recently bought a new flat was forced to believe that flats provide many facilities which are worth living. Therefore, apartments foster better lifestyle to people and also enhance the value of the city.
On the other hand, others believe that the large number of areas must be used for residential properties because this area offers large space for parking and other facilities. In addition, the government can also use such areas for public uses such as gardens, parks, play areas and other such facilities. This offers entertainment to children and elderly people. For example, my mother often visit nearby gardens for exercise and walk which helps her to stay away from home and stay healthy. Thus, using such areas can be beneficial to many people.
In conclusion, although individual houses provide large space to people. Tall apartments are more convenient and easier because they take less land and offer better safety precautions. This also occupy enormous number of people. Thus, apartments are advantageous to the cities which are smaller.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether building tall apartment blocks is the best way to provide homes in large cities, presenting a clear viewpoint by the conclusion. However, the development of ideas lacks depth and relies heavily on personal anecdotes rather than broader socio-economic arguments. For instance, the support provided in the second and third body paragraphs consists of narrow examples like 'one of my friends who recently bought a new flat' or 'my mother often visit nearby gardens'. While a position is discernible, the arguments tend to over-generalize and remain somewhat limited in scope, fitting the characteristics of Band 6 where relevant ideas are presented but remain under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion adequately. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through the opposing viewpoints. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is occasionally faulty, such as the sudden shift in the conclusion discussing cities that are 'smaller', which does not fully align logically with the discussion on large cities throughout the essay. Paragraph progression is generally evident, but the internal logical links within paragraphs can feel disjointed due to abrupt transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their main ideas successfully. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary and phrases, such as 'amenities', 'breathtaking views', and 'residential properties'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'foster better lifestyle to people' instead of 'foster a better lifestyle for people', and 'occupy enormous number of people' instead of 'accommodate a large number of people'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical range remains somewhat limited and repetitive, which prevents the writing from achieving a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses ('who recently bought') and conditional or concessive clauses ('although individual houses provide'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, such as missing articles ('staying in apartments', 'use such areas for public uses'), missing plural markers ('exercise and walk', referring to plural nouns improperly), and run-on structures or incorrect capitalization after periods. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they persist across the text, placing the grammar performance firmly within the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range.
