Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowdays, many large cities have a shortage of homes because their populations are growing. Some people believe that building tall apartment blocks is the best way to solve this problem. I partly agree with this idea because it can provides many homes, but there are also other posible solutions.

To begin with, there is an array of reasons to belive that building tall apartments block is the best way. They saves land and houses more people. Tall buildings can provide many houses on a small amount of land. In addition, a single aprtment block can have hundreds of apartments, so many families can live in one building, while the same number of houses would require a much larger area of land.

In addition to this there is numerous other factors such as reducing housing shortages. Building more apartments can increase the number of available homes and help solve housing problems in large cities. When there are more homes avavilable it can help reduce the shortage of accommodation. People may also be able to live closer to their workplace and public transport. For instance, high rise buildings built near train stations can provide homes for many workplaces and allow them to travel easily without using cars.

Secondly, it is convenient for residents. Apartment blocks can be built near workplaces, schools and public transportataion, making daily travel easier.

In conclusion, I agree that building tall aprtment blocks is an effective way to provide enough homes in large cities. This is because they can house many people while using less land and can help reduce housing shortages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear, albeit somewhat mixed, position ("I partly agree with this idea because it can provides many homes, but there are also other posible solutions"). The main ideas—such as saving land, accommodating more people, and improving proximity to workplaces—are relevant and supported with explanations, though they tend to be slightly repetitive, especially regarding proximity to transport and work. The response meets the core requirements of Task 2 by exploring both the benefits of tall apartment blocks and acknowledging that alternative solutions exist. Therefore, it satisfies the requirements for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with logical progression. The writer uses standard cohesive devices and transitional phrases such as "To begin with", "In addition to this", and "In conclusion" to signal the flow of ideas. However, paragraphing is somewhat messy and repetitive; for instance, the idea of proximity to transport and workplaces is introduced, then repeated and expanded upon in a separate brief paragraph ("Secondly, it is convenient for residents"), which disrupts logical flow. Referencing is generally clear, but mechanical transitions place this firmly in the Band 6 category.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as "housing shortages", "accommodation", and "public transportation". However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including "Nowdays" instead of "nowadays", "posible" instead of "possible", "belive" instead of "believe", "apartments block" instead of "apartment blocks", "aprtment" instead of "apartment", and "avavilable" instead of "available". These errors do not impede overall communication, but their frequency prevents the score from reaching a Band 7.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure (e.g., "When there are more homes avavilable it can help reduce the shortage of accommodation"). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and slips, such as subject-verb agreement issues ("it can provides"), missing pluralisation ("apartments block"), and punctuation slips. While complex sentences are attempted, they are often accompanied by mechanical errors. Communication is rarely impeded, matching the Band 6 descriptor well.
