Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the prompt regarding whether building tall apartment blocks is the best way to provide homes in large cities. A position is stated in the introduction, arguing that tall buildings are profitable and solve land scarcity. However, the development of ideas is severely hindered by the length of the response. At only 179 words, the essay falls well short of the 250-word minimum requirement. As a result, the arguments presented in the body paragraphs remain limited and under-developed, cutting off mid-sentence. While the candidate attempts to present relevant ideas regarding land conservation and urban pressure, the incomplete nature of the response prevents a fully developed discussion, leading to a penalty under this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response attempts an overall structure with an introduction and some body paragraphs, but the organizational flow breaks down quickly. Transitional devices like 'firsly' and 'secondly' are used to sequence points, though with spelling errors. Paragraphing is poorly maintained, and the text abruptly stops mid-sentence at the end of the second body paragraph ('Moreover living in an will ease the pressure...'). There is no conclusion. While some logical links are attempted, the severe lack of completion and faulty cohesion across the text mean that overall progression cannot be properly established, aligning the response with Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, featuring phrases like 'profitable way', 'busy cities', and 'huge apartment blocks'. There are several noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'requirements of enough homes to people', 'land resourse', and 'humongous' which is overly informal for an academic task. Spelling errors are also present, including 'firsly' and 'resourse'. The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for expressing simple ideas, but the noticeable errors and lack of sophisticated vocabulary place it firmly in the Band 5.0 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('in large cities there are the requirements'), incorrect prepositions, and subject-verb agreement issues ('people from all over the country wants'). Punctuation and capitalization are also faulty at the start of sentences and with words like 'firsly'. Furthermore, because the essay cuts off mid-sentence, grammatical structures remain incomplete. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a typical Band 5.0 performance.
