Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent times, the population in metropolitan cities is growing drastically, leading to the lack of accommodation. It is widely believed that an excellent way to cover up the shortage of houses is to build multi-storey buildings. I am partially convinced with the statement because of some reasons.
To commence with, constructing tall apartment blocks may fulfill the demand of living areas in the urban areas. In other words, it would be convenient for the individuals searching a spacious place to live in. An ideal example would be the employees who live in cities, far away from their hometown. As a result, a lage number of people will be able to find a home, fulfilling their requirements.
In addition, it can be advantageous for the development of the cities as well. To explain it, when an urban area has sufficient amenities, the opportunities also increase which eventually lead to the economic growth of a particular area. For instance, Delhi is a metropolis having numerous skyscrapers for the people coming from various parts of the country. Hence, tall buildings provide various options for young people to build their career.
Nevertheless, safety concerns must not be overlooked. This is because tall buildings might lead to destruction if safety measures are not taken into account. For example, a recent article has shown the information about the loss of human lives because of the demolishment of a tall building. Therefore, appropriate preventive measures could be taken to protect human lives.
In conclusion, although there are some salfety issues, the benefits of the tall buildings are much more significant and cannot be ignored.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position regarding the prompt. The student partially agrees with the statement, which is a valid and nuanced stance. Ideas are extended and supported, such as discussing urban employment demands and economic growth with the example of Delhi, as well as acknowledging safety concerns. However, some arguments remain slightly brief or general, and the conclusion mentions 'salfety' issues rather than fully expanding on the mitigation of those risks. This corresponds to the Band 7 descriptor where all parts of the task are addressed and a clear position is maintained throughout, though ideas could be slightly more thoroughly developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving from the introduction of the stance to the advantages for housing and economic development, followed by a counter-argument regarding safety, and a final conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'To commence with', 'In addition', 'Nevertheless', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used appropriately and sufficiently to structure the text logically. Referencing is generally clear, and although occasional transitions feel slightly formulaic, the overall progression supports the flow of ideas well, aligning closely with Band 7 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'metropolitan cities', 'multi-storey buildings', 'urban area', and 'economic growth' are used appropriately. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary alongside minor lexical or typographical errors, such as 'searching a spacious place' (missing 'for'), 'lage' (spelling slip for 'large'), and 'salfety' in the conclusion. These errors do not impede communication and the writer generally conveys precise meanings, fitting the Band 6.0 to 6.5 profile, comfortably rounding to a Band 6.5 for adequate range and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures reasonably well. Examples include 'when an urban area has sufficient amenities, the opportunities also increase which eventually lead to the economic growth'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing present, such as 'searching a spacious place' instead of 'searching for', and subject-verb agreement slips like 'opportunities... lead'. However, these errors are relatively minor and rarely impede communication. The control of punctuation and sentence boundaries is generally sound, supporting a Band 6.0 rating as a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with intermittent errors.
