Student answer (Band 6.5)

In metro cities, building high-rises is the best way to incorporate homes to everyone. This essay completely agrees with this idea because it can easily accommodate a large number of people on a limited piece of land and the remaining land can be used for other important purposes.

To begin with, it is a fact that industrialisation has made so many people from different regions come to the cities in search of a better lifestyle and employment. An increasing number of people has raised a problem of accommodating a higher number of people in comparatively smaller area. That is why multi-story apartment blocks can provide enough homes because it takes considerably less space on land by placing more than one apartment block on top of one another. For example, in India, Mumbai contains many high-rise apartments that accommodate a large population in a city centre.

Another major reason is that, land has so many uses other than just providing homes. Using tall apartment blocks can spare land area that can be used for different business purposes such as IT companies, restaurants, hotels and many more. Cities with such facilities not only provide employment and a good lifestyle but also contribute towards the nation's economy by becoming a metropolitan area because it can accommodate a large number of people and create jobs for them as well. For instance, Bangalore, a metro city in India has become an IT hub for people all over the nation because it had the capability to provide places to stay and that was achieved by making high-rises.

To conclude, an increasing number of people migrate to the places with potential industrialisation possibilities. Building tall apartment blocks in such cities is the best way to provide enough houses to people because it uses a small region to accommodate a large population and the remaining lands can be used to develop such cities further.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a position that tall apartment blocks are the best solution for urban housing shortages. The essay presents well-developed supporting ideas, such as space efficiency and the release of land for commercial and economic purposes. Arguments are supported with relevant examples, including mentions of Mumbai and Bangalore in India. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay, demonstrating a clear understanding of the prompt and fulfilling the criteria well in line with Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introduction, followed by two well-supported body paragraphs addressing different aspects of the argument, and a clear conclusion. Cohesive devices are used adequately and appropriately, such as 'To begin with', 'That is why', and 'Another major reason is that'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently. However, some cohesive links feel slightly formulaic, keeping the response at a solid Band 7 level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary that allows for some flexibility and precision, such as 'industrialisation', 'accommodate', 'metropolitan area', and 'migrate'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'potential industrialisation possibilities' and 'incorporate homes', though some word choices are slightly awkward or unnatural. Occasional minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice appear, but the vocabulary is adequate to convey the message clearly, matching the Band 6.5 to 7.0 profile well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control over several complex structures like 'An increasing number of people has raised a problem...' and relative clauses. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('An increasing number of people has' instead of 'have'), and preposition use ('in comparatively smaller area' instead of 'in a comparatively smaller area'). However, these errors do not impede communication, and the majority of sentences are clear and well-structured, placing this securely at a Band 6.5.
