Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many countries, like America, Germany and other european countries high rise apartments are constructed to support homeless people. Although, some portion of society wants to accomodate them with seperate homes but I totally agree that apartments are the most advanced and cheaper approach rather than independent open homes.

Firstly, in bigger urban area there is less availability of sufficient space to provide public with open houses so making elevated apartments will reduce this tension. Furthermore, same size of area might provide homes to 10 families whereas on that particular area more than 100 families can survive with the idea of gigantic buildings.

Secondly, the cost might be reduced to construct apartments as buying raw material like cement, brick, and wood in bulk for apartments would help in getting discount which might reduced the average cost. As a result people who has financial problem can buy it easliy due to low demand

However, there are some people who are not in favour of flats, they think that building might be demolished due to heavy earthquake whereas open homes are affected less. In addition they also believe living in flats will not allow you to enjoy the rain, sunlight and air properly whcih are the necessary for good health and in previous years Turkey's high rise building were vanished due to high mangitude earthquake that's why many people lost their precious lives.

In conclusion, building big flats would help many people to live comfortably without facing any accomodation problems and also in more ecnomical way. Therefore, this might be the only possibe solution to provide homes in this fast changing population world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the extent of agreement with building tall apartment blocks to provide homes in large cities. The student takes a clear position in the introduction ('I totally agree that apartments are the most advanced and cheaper approach rather than independent open homes') and maintains it throughout the essay. Relevant ideas such as space efficiency and construction cost reduction are introduced, and a counterargument regarding earthquakes and lifestyle is acknowledged and addressed. However, some of the ideas are slightly under-developed or contain sweeping generalisations, such as the claim about low demand reducing prices. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed adequately, placing this response firmly in Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as space, cost, and counterarguments. Cohesive devices are employed to signal transitions, for instance, 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', 'Secondly', and 'However'. Nevertheless, referencing is occasionally imprecise, and some cohesive links feel somewhat mechanical or repetitive. The logical progression is generally clear, though paragraph transitions could be smoother. This level of organisation and cohesion aligns well with the descriptors for Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'gigantic buildings', 'magnitude earthquake', and 'economical way'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'accomodate' instead of accommodate, 'seperate' instead of separate, 'ecnomical' instead of economical, and 'possibe' instead of possible. Furthermore, collocations are occasionally unnatural, such as 'open houses' or 'independent open homes'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching Band 7.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinating clauses such as 'Although, some portion of society wants to accomodate them... but I totally agree...' (though this contains a double-marking error with 'although' and 'but'). There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement errors ('people who has financial problem can buy it easliy'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing ('which are the necessary for good health'). While these errors are frequent enough to detract from grammatical control, they rarely impede the reader's understanding, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptor.
