Student answer (Band 6.0)

As the population of the urban cities are increasing, building high-rise apartments is considered to be the effective way to provide sufficient housing.I partly agree with the statement as high rise building can accomodate a large number of people with limited use of land but it cannot be the only way to provide enough housing, other form of housing can also be planned and used.

The primary reason why tall apartments are useful is because they save land. Large cities have smaller vacant and available land therefore building vertically rather than horizontally allows more residents to live in the same area. This is especially useful where land prices are extremely high such as metropolitian cities of the world. For example: Instead of constructing 100 homes in a certain area, a large high-rise building can provide hundreds of apartments on a relatively small piece of land. If designed properly, apartments complexes can provide smaller and relatively more affordable home. They can be particularly useful of nuclear families, young professional. These buildings have better access to facilities and can be constructed near metro stations, schools, hospitals, shopping centres and officies making it easier to commute.

Another reason why they are not the only solution is overcrowding, if too many people are concentrated in one building or neighbourhood then lifts become crowded, roads can be congested, privacy can be hindered, schools and shopping centres may face pressure. Quality of life can also be negatively impacted, some people prefer houses with garden and more personal space. these tall buildings may provide accomodation but not necessarily a comfortable living environment. Other housing solutions which government can use is to develop low rise building or medium rise building, converted unusal commercials into homes, develop housing in less crowded areas and improve public transport so people can live outside city centres.

In conclusion, highrise building can be best to live but not the only solution to provide enough housing

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position ('I partly agree with the statement') and discussing both sides of the argument. In the second paragraph, the student provides relevant examples and reasons regarding why tall buildings save land and offer convenience near metro stations and schools. In the third paragraph, the counter-arguments are explored, touching upon overcrowding, quality of life, and alternative solutions like low-rise buildings or converting commercial spaces. The ideas are extended and supported, demonstrating a solid understanding of the prompt. However, some points tend to over-generalise slightly, placing the response comfortably within the Band 7 descriptor where all parts are addressed and a clear position is maintained throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. It is divided into four paragraphs: an introduction, a body paragraph supporting tall buildings, a body paragraph outlining drawbacks and alternative solutions, and a brief conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The primary reason why', 'Another reason why', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, referencing and paragraph internal cohesion can occasionally feel a bit mechanical, and there are some minor punctuation and spacing errors that affect the flow. Overall, the logical structure and progression reflect the Band 7 criteria well.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'accommodate', 'metropolitan', 'overcrowding', and 'infrastructure-related concepts'. There are some vocabulary and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'accomodate' instead of 'accommodate', 'unusal' instead of 'unusual', and 'commercials' instead of 'commercial buildings'. Word choice is generally sufficient for the writer to convey their meaning clearly, though occasional awkward phrasing appears, such as 'highrise building can be best to live'. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response at Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text. Examples include comma splices and run-on sentences, such as 'Large cities have smaller vacant and available land therefore building vertically rather than horizontally allows more residents to live in the same area.' Additionally, there are subject-verb agreement issues like 'As the population of the urban cities are increasing' instead of 'is increasing'. While complex structures are attempted, frequent minor errors in punctuation and grammar prevent the score from reaching a higher band, making Band 6 an appropriate evaluation.
