Student answer (Band 6.0)

Developed cities around the world face housing issues due to the over population and lack of enough space to facilitate everyone. Some individuals believe that tall skyscrapers are the solution to this crisis. Although, high storied apartments bring in a lot of problems, I agree this does resolve the accomodation difficulties.

A lot of cities experience sevaral changes and redevelopments with growing technology and innovations. This induce changes not only in the architecture of the city but also in the expansion of the city borders, making it difficult to purchase a decent house in the middle of the city where commercial complexes and office space are in the most demand. Moreover, with advancements the urban areas also observe rise in the land prices, which may not be in the affordable range of a lot of people. For example, people in mumbai choose to travel more than 2 hours of journey by local trains to work due to costly rents in the heart of the city.

Furthermore, apartments can reduce the housing space and give a proper facilitative living to a lot of families in just one block of area. With proper infrastructure, the skyscrapers are able to manage including recreational and shopping complexes as a part of the construction, making it easy for people with busy lifestyles to get necessary groceries. Furthermore, apartments also include really good security measures that is usually difficult with a single home.

On the other hand, apartments would drain out a proper home experience with no individual space for oneself. Poorly built apartments cause a lot of issues in the long term and cannot be seen as a permanent living plan for most citizens.

In conclusion, an individual house does have more advantages than an apartment, but the overly populated cities do not give much options for majority of people with moderate income, making tall skyscrapers the best option to tackle the housing issue in my opinion.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing the problem of urban housing and presenting a clear position agreeing with the use of tall apartment blocks. The student introduces relevant ideas, such as high land prices, urban sprawl, and the convenience and security offered by apartments. However, some arguments lack full extension and development, particularly the counter-argument regarding the lack of individual space, which is introduced hastily in the fourth paragraph and left underexplored. Additionally, there are minor over-generalizations. Overall, the task is addressed adequately and a clear stance is maintained from the introduction to the conclusion, aligning well with the expectations of a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a clear focus: the introduction sets the context and stance, the second body paragraph discusses the economic drivers of high-rise living, the third covers the internal benefits of apartments, the fourth addresses drawbacks, and the final paragraph concludes the discussion. Cohesive devices are employed appropriately, such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and paragraph transitions are sometimes slightly mechanical, and the sentence structure 'Although, high storied apartments bring in a lot of problems, I agree...' exhibits a minor cohesive glitch with the introductory conjunction. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'redevelopments', 'commercial complexes', and 'infrastructure'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors that prevent a higher band, including 'over population' (overpopulation), 'sevaral' (several), 'induce' (induces), 'accomodation' (accommodation), 'mumbai' (Mumbai), and 'high storied' (multi-storeyed or high-rise). While these errors do not severely impede communication, they highlight a lack of precision in word choice and spelling control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure with relative clauses and subordinating conjunctions. There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors present. For instance, 'This induce changes' lacks subject-verb agreement, 'travel more than 2 hours of journey' is awkward phrasing, and 'measure that is usually difficult' should be plural ('measures that are'). Furthermore, the opening sentence of the third paragraph contains slight structural looseness. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout, and they rarely impede communication, placing the text comfortably in the Band 6 category.
