Student answer (Band 5.5)

In this modern era, people are living in cities with much less space. They are living in just one room apartment, that is not enough to live.It covers much space and not suitable to live. But they are living just because some of their compulsions and tough circumtances related to their home and other issues. Citizens are less related to others life and their difficulty also, they don't have relation with others just busy in their own life. Building tall apartment blocks is the best way to overcome this problem. Might some people disagree with this but I completely agree not only because it will conduct low space but also help to maintain friendly relation with others.

Firslty, building large room buildings will help to gain less space and provide much space to live and also helps to give area for living, sleeping and sitting as a proper home.Taking an example of China, as Chinese government construct long house's buildings, as they conduct less area and give proper space to live. They build these building to help and provide much facilities under one roof.

Secondly, this development will also provide unique chance to make good relations with their neighbours to spend their quality time with them, as when they become friends they will share their problems and reduce their headache and pressure from daily work that always on their's mind. For instance, about 10 years ago in Japan people were taking their task seriously and didn't talk to anyone, just busy on their daily routine. Then their government build these appartments to gave them possiblity to make friends and reduce their tension from minds.

Finally, it will be very benificial for local citizens as I mentioned fot conducting less space and help people to maintain relation with theie neighbours.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position of complete agreement with the statement that building tall apartment blocks is the best way to provide enough homes in large cities. The response contains relevant ideas extending across two main body paragraphs, focusing on efficient space utilization and the social benefits of community living. Examples are provided, such as references to China and Japan, although they remain somewhat general and lack specific depth. While the position is clear throughout, the development of ideas occasionally lacks precision and tends to over-generalise. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are adequately addressed, aligning best with the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays a generally coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs signalled by transition words ('Firslty', 'Secondly'), and a brief concluding remark. Paragraphing is used to separate main ideas effectively. However, cohesion at the sentence level is frequently faulty or mechanical. For example, referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are used repetitively or incorrectly (e.g., 'as when they become friends they will share...'). Additionally, transitional phrases contain mechanical errors. Progression is discernible, but the faulty use of cohesive devices places this response firmly at Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'compulsions', 'circumstances', and 'benificial'. However, there are frequent errors in word choice, spelling ('circumtances', 'benificial', 'appartments'), and collocation, such as 'conduct low space' and 'gain less space'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are noticeable and cause some difficulty for the reader. The repetition of basic terms like 'living' and 'space' further limits the lexical range, making Band 5 the most accurate descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures. However, frequent grammatical errors occur throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('as Chinese government construct long house's buildings'), missing articles, awkward phrasing ('that always on their's mind'), and punctuation errors. While some simple sentences are error-free and communication is generally maintained despite the inaccuracies, the high frequency of errors across complex structures prevents the essay from reaching Band 6, placing it at Band 5.
