Student answer (Band 7.5)

As urban populations continue to grow, many cities are facing a shortage of land for housing. One proposed solution is the construction of tall apartment buildings. I believe that high-rise residential developments are one of the most effective ways to address this issue, although they are not without drawbacks.

The primary advantage of tall apartment blocks is that they allow a large number of people to live within a relatively small area of land. In densely populated cities, where available land is limited and expensive, vertical development makes much more efficient use of space than traditional houses. For example, a single high-rise building can accommodate hundreds of families, whereas the same area of land might only support a few detached houses.

Another benefit is that modern apartment complexes often provide a wide range of facilities for residents. Many buildings include supermarkets, gyms, pharmacies, childcare centres, and recreational areas. As a result, people can access essential services without travelling long distances, which saves both time and transportation costs. Furthermore, concentrating housing in a smaller area can reduce urban sprawl and help preserve land for parks and other public facilities.

However, some people argue that living in apartments has certain disadvantages. Houses generally offer greater privacy, outdoor space, and a quieter environment. In addition, individuals who have spent most of their lives in traditional homes may find it difficult to adapt to apartment living. Despite these concerns, advances in building design and urban planning have significantly improved the quality of life in modern residential complexes.

In conclusion, although apartment living may not suit everyone, constructing tall residential buildings remains one of the most practical and efficient solutions to housing shortages in major cities. Therefore, I strongly agree that high-rise developments should play a central role in accommodating growing urban populations.
