Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether building tall apartment blocks is the best way to provide enough homes in large cities, and the writer clearly states an agreement with this view. Main ideas are presented, such as accommodating office workers and saving urban space, but these points tend to be under-developed and lack extension. For example, the mention of Dubai's apartments or the 2020 statistic regarding families in apartments are introduced abruptly without sufficient analysis to fully support the argument. Additionally, there are minor generalisations regarding housing needs and luxury lifestyles. This places the response comfortably at Band 6, as all parts of the task are addressed, but the development of ideas remains somewhat limited and superficial throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance established in the introduction and maintained through the body paragraphs. Paragraphing is utilised, although the transitions and linking phrases feel mechanical and sometimes awkward, such as 'Probing ahead' and 'Agglomerating the aforementioned points'. Cohesive devices are used, but referencing is occasionally unclear or faulty, as seen in pronoun usage ('It have been found' and 'it also help'). The flow of ideas between sentences is sometimes disrupted by phrasing that obscures logical progression. Consequently, these features align best with the Band 5 descriptors, as the text shows clear organisational structure and paragraphing, but the mechanical and occasionally inaccurate use of cohesion pulls the rating down.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'accommodation', 'convenience', and 'financial condition'. However, there are numerous word choice and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, including 'devloped' instead of developed, 'unconvenience' instead of inconvenience, 'desingns' instead of designs, and 'artificial house'. These errors occasionally cause strain for the reader, though communication is generally maintained. Collocations are not always natural, such as 'running cities' instead of bustling or major cities. Because the vocabulary is adequate for basic task completion but marred by frequent spelling and word-form errors, a Band 5 score is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses ('individuals who lives in larger cities') and conditional ideas. However, control over grammar is weak, with frequent errors in subject-verb agreement ('individuals who lives', 'people who lives', 'it also help', 'worker who lives'), incorrect verb forms ('are going to build' instead of to be built, 'it had been found'), and punctuation issues, notably comma splices ('It is extensively acknowledged that, the most convenient way...'). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader, matching the Band 5 profile where a limited range of structures is attempted and complex sentences are often faulty.
