Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt regarding whether building tall apartment blocks is the best way to provide homes in large cities. The student takes a clear position agreeing with the prompt and provides some supporting points, such as saving nature, freeing up space, and improving traffic congestion. However, the ideas are often underdeveloped, repetitive, and lack specific, well-reasoned examples. For instance, the argument about traffic improvement is stated simply rather than fully explained. The response meets the minimum length requirement, but the limited depth of argumentation places it firmly in the Band 5 category, as the ideas are rather basic and lack thorough elaboration.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, showing a basic attempt at overall organisation with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing sentence structures, such as starting paragraphs with phrases like 'To begin with firstly' and 'Moving further ahead'. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or inaccurately, and referencing is sometimes unclear, making it hard to follow the logical flow between sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks unity. These features align with the Band 5 descriptors for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical resource is quite limited and repetitive throughout the essay. The student relies heavily on basic vocabulary and incorrect collocations, such as 'manufacture tall and good apartments', 'raw houses', and 'less cowdable'. There are frequent errors in word choice and morphology, such as 'publics' instead of 'the public' and 'worthy' instead of 'better' or 'preferable'. Although the writer attempts some less common vocabulary like 'congested' and 'skyscrapers complex', inaccurate usage and noticeable errors cause some difficulty for the reader, which is characteristic of Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical range is severely restricted. The response relies mostly on simple sentences and attempts at complex structures are almost always faulty, featuring serious errors in tense, subject-verb agreement, and clause structure. Examples include 'This essays agree', 'as compare to raw houses build tower block is more suitable', and 'if someone make many raw houses it is a chance the capacity...'. Punctuation errors are also prevalent, such as sentence fragments and comma splices. Because frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and simple structures dominate, the grammar performance reflects Band 4.5, rounded to a Band 5.
