Student answer (Band 6.0)
The ideal way to supply enough homes in big cities is to construct tall flat blocks . i completly agree with this view because living apartments are today's essential for everyone and living at personal house is also an compulory thing to do . For that purpose , build tall apartments are totally common today .
First of all, tall buildings can help cities use land more effectively. In large cities, there is often not enough empty land for building separate houses for everyone. If apartments are built upwards, many families can live in the same area. For example, in cities such as Hong Kong and Singapore, many people live in high-rise buildings because there is limited space for housing. Therefore, building tall apartments can be a good solution for cities with a large population.
Secondly, apartment blocks can be built close to important facilities such as schools, shops and public transport. This makes daily life easier for residents. People may not need to travel long distances to go to work or buy things. In addition, public transport can be used more easily when many people live in one area. This can also help reduce traffic and pollution in cities.
However, some people may prefer houses because they usually have more space and privacy. Living in a tall apartment can sometimes be uncomfortable, especially when there are too many residents in one building. Despite this, I believe that the advantages of high-rise apartments are greater, especially in crowded cities where land is expensive and limited.
In conclusion, I agree that building tall apartment blocks is one of the best ways to provide enough homes in large cities. They allow more people to live in a small area and can also make public transport and other facilities easier to provide.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear, well-supported position throughout. The introduction clearly states agreement with the prompt, and the body paragraphs offer relevant and extended arguments regarding land effectiveness and the proximity of facilities. For instance, the writer notes that 'in cities such as Hong Kong and Singapore, many people live in high-rise buildings because there is limited space for housing.' While the opening sentence contains minor logical confusion by linking living apartments to a personal house being a 'compulsory thing to do', the overall development of ideas is coherent and fully relevant to the prompt. The response reaches a band 7 level for task achievement due to its clear position and well-supported main ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from land effectiveness in paragraph two to the benefits of close facilities in paragraph three, and acknowledging a counter-argument in paragraph four before concluding. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Secondly', 'In addition', and 'Despite this' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the text, although spacing errors around punctuation marks occasionally appear. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, satisfying the requirements for a band 7 score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, such as 'effective', 'high-rise buildings', 'limited space', and 'public transport'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, particularly in the introduction where phrases like 'flat blocks', 'completly agree', 'living apartments', and 'personal house is also an compulory thing' show awkward phrasing and spelling slips ('completly', 'compulory'). Because the vocabulary is adequate for the task but contains frequent minor lexical and spelling errors that prevent it from reaching a higher band, a band 6.0 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully using conditional structures and subordinate clauses such as 'If apartments are built upwards, many families can live in the same area' and 'especially when there are too many residents in one building.' However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, including spacing before punctuation ('blocks . i', 'purpose , build'), verb form errors ('build tall apartments are totally common'), and article usage. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, placing the response solidly at a band 6.0 for grammatical range and accuracy.
