Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many large cities, the demand for housing is increasing rapidly due to population growth and urbanisation. Some people believe that constructing tall apartment buildings is the most effective way to provide sufficient accomodation. While i agreethat high rise buildings can help address housing shortages, I believe that other housing solutionjs are equally important.
On the one hand, building tall apartment blocks can accomodate a large number of people within a limited area of land. This is perticulary beneficial in denesely populated cities where available space is restricted and land prices are extremely high. Furthermore, apartments can be developed near workplaces, schools and public transport facilities, allowing residents to save time and reduce their commuting expenses. Therefore, high rise housing can be practical solution to urban housing shortages.
On the other hand, relying entirely on tall buildings may create certain problems. For instance, overcrowding can put pressure on public facillities such as roads, hospitals and water suppiles. Moreover, not everyone prefers apartment living, particularly families who require more private outdoor space. Governments should therefore consider alternative approches, such as developing projects in suburban areas and improving public transport connections between residental areas and city centres.
In conclusion, I agree that constructing tall apartment buildings ia an effective way to increase housing availability in large cities. However, I do not believe it is the only solution. A combination of high rise appartments, affordable housing would provide a more balanced approach to meeting the growing demand for homes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide housing in large cities, presenting a clear position that while they are useful, other solutions are equally important. Key ideas are supported with relevant arguments regarding land scarcity, commuting times, and pressure on public facilities. However, there is a minor penalty to consider regarding length, as the response falls slightly short of the 250-word minimum requirement at 246 words. Despite this slight under-length, all parts of the task are addressed adequately, and the position is well-maintained throughout. Ideas are developed sufficiently to warrant a solid score for task response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Information and ideas are structured into appropriate paragraphs, starting with an introduction that outlines the writer's stance, moving into body paragraphs that explore both sides of the argument, and finishing with a logical conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect ideas, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, and referencing throughout the text is generally clear, allowing the reader to follow the argument smoothly without confusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic essay, incorporating terms such as 'urbanisation', 'housing shortages', 'denesely' (densely), and 'infrastructure'. There are several spelling and typographical errors, including 'accomodation' (accommodation), 'solutionjs', 'perticulary' (particularly), 'denesely' (densely), 'approches' (approaches), 'residental' (residential), and 'appartments' (apartments). While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect a lack of precision that prevents the lexical score from reaching higher bands. However, the use of phrases like 'limited area of land' and 'public transport facilities' shows a satisfactory command of everyday academic phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'While i agreethat high rise buildings can help address housing shortages, I believe that other housing solutionjs are equally important.' Punctuation and capitalisation have occasional flaws, such as 'i agreethat' and extra spacing in 'high rise appartments'. Grammatical accuracy is generally good, with most simple sentences being error-free, and complex structures managed well enough so that errors rarely impede communication, aligning with the descriptors for Band 6.5.
