Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argues that building tall residential complexes is the best way to accomodate large number of individuals in big cities. I completely agree that this is the most practical and beneficial way for city planning

On the one hand, rather than planning the city horizontally the government should focus on constructing vertical buildings as less area of land in size is required to accomodate thousands of members in one place. Furthermore, high-rise residential blocs are mostly located near facilities such as schools, hospitals, shopping malls and airport so that it is considerably convenient to the individuals. In addition, employee working in IT company can save their travel time. For example, the Singapore City and the New York City both are planned in such a way that thousands and thousands of people are accomodated in numerous high-rise buildings in a particular locality whereas it also enhances cityescape view.

One the other hand, there are some drawbacks as the more the development the more prices will rise so the low-income families could not afford to purchase. In additiion, few families who want independent house with a big balcony or a garden in the poarch area specially having kids can find it difficult to adjust in tall residential buildings. Moreover, in high- rise buildings families rarely know each other or may feel isolated as there is hardely an interaction between them. Additionally, government should plan the city keeping this things in mind according to the requirements of the families or individual.

To conclude, from my perspective developing a city's landscape vertically can be beneficial for the future growth however there are some factors which need to be taken care of by the government.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear and consistent position in agreement with the statement. The ideas presented are relevant, such as discussing land efficiency and convenience on one hand, and the drawbacks like affordability and social isolation on the other. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the mention of Singapore and New York is brief and lacks deeper elaboration. Despite this, the central arguments are well supported and the position is maintained throughout the essay. The student successfully meets the requirements of the task by exploring both the benefits and limitations of building tall residential blocks, resulting in a solid performance for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, including a clear introduction and conclusion. There is a logical progression of ideas overall, moving from the benefits in the second paragraph to the drawbacks in the third. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in minor awkward transitions and repetitive sentence openings. Paragraphing is adequate, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs occasionally feels disjointed, such as abruptly shifting from public transport to IT employees and then to city examples in a single sentence. Overall, the organizational structure is sufficiently clear to earn this band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'residential complexes', 'practical and beneficial', 'horizontally', 'vertical buildings', and 'cityscape view'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that detract from precision, such as 'accomodate' (accommodate), 'blocs' (blocks), 'employee' (employees), 'hardely' (hardly), and 'poarch' (porch). Furthermore, phrases like 'the more the development the more prices will rise' show awkward phrasing. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, the recurrent errors in spelling and collocation prevent the response from achieving a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical errors are frequent throughout the response. Examples include the opening passive error 'It is often argues', missing articles ('in IT company', 'in poarch area'), and incorrect punctuation or fragmented ideas, such as the run-on sentence structure in the second paragraph ('For example, the Singapore City and the New York City both are planned...'). Additionally, subject-verb agreement errors occur, such as 'the low-income families could not afford' combined with awkward modifiers. Although these errors do not severely impede communication, they occur regularly enough to restrict the score to this level.
