Student answer (Band 6.5)
There is considerable debate over whether tall apartment blocks can ensure necessary number of accomodation in large cities. One of the major problems in mega cities is the lack of lands whereas more people are relocatting to large cities, making them even congested. Although tall buildings can accomodate higher number of residents, they can be many geological and environmental challenges. Nevertheless, I largely agree with the proposal, as it can be adapted to accomodate the growing population in the world.
One of the major advantage of tall buildings are that they can accomodate significantly higher number of people in a relatively smaller land. As a result, more people will be able to relocate to large cities and can contribute to the development of the economy. In addition, living under the same roof can create social bonding among a large number of people.
Tall buildings can be risky in case of any geological changes and unfortunate events. For example, earthquack can kill large number of people at once which can be reduced by building shorter buildings, and distributed acroos several places. Moreover, constrcution at that scale can directly contribute to air and noise pollution. Furthermore, in case of emergencies such as fire, walking down the stairs can be significantly challenging. However, with the advancement in technology and architectural developments, all these problems can more or less be addressed. For instance, finding safe place and accurate calculation for the foundation can reduce the risk of loos in earthquack, and helicopter based fire briged can be useful for rescue missions.
In conclusion, although the tall buildings have geological risk and can create environmental problem, it solves one of the greatest problem of future world by accomodating large number of people in a relatively smaller place. Therefore, I agree in constructing tall buildings, given enough precautions and modern technology is used.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of tall apartment blocks and clearly stating a position agreeing with the statement. The ideas are generally well developed, such as discussing land conservation, economic contribution, and technological solutions to geological risks. However, some arguments like the social bonding point in the second paragraph are slightly under-developed and lack extension. The writer maintains a clear position throughout the essay. This aligns well with the Band 7 descriptor, where all parts of the task are addressed and a clear position is maintained, though certain supporting ideas could be further elaborated for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay displays clear logical organisation and a progression throughout the response. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the topic, such as advantages, disadvantages, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, including transitional phrases like 'In addition', 'For example', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and referencing links are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive, and paragraph transitions could be smoother in places. Overall, the structural flow is easy to follow and meets the requirements of a Band 6.5 to 7.0, comfortably fitting a solid Band 7 for coherent overall arrangement and logical sequencing.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'geological changes', 'architectural developments', and 'helicopter based fire briged'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'accomodation' (repeatedly misspelled), 'relocatting', 'congested' used without 'over', 'earthquack', 'loos' instead of 'loss', and 'briged' instead of 'brigade'. These lexical errors and spelling mistakes do not seriously impede communication but restrict the score to Band 6, as they show recurring inaccuracies in less common lexical items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and concessive clauses such as 'Although tall buildings can accomodate higher number of residents, they can be many geological and environmental challenges.' There are, however, several grammatical errors present, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('One of the major advantage... are') and missing articles ('lack of lands', 'reduce the risk of loos'). Despite these recurring errors, punctuation is generally adequate and the errors rarely impede communication, allowing the response to secure a Band 6 for grammatical range and accuracy.
