Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the extent of agreement regarding tall apartment blocks as a solution for housing in large cities. The writer presents a clear position supporting this view while acknowledging counterarguments regarding environmental impacts and high rent. Ideas are introduced, such as community benefits, facilities, and cost implications, but they tend to be somewhat generalised and under-developed due to limited elaboration. For example, the mention of Mumbai provides a specific context, but the explanation remains brief. According to the band 6 descriptors, the task is addressed with relevant ideas, though some parts lack deeper exploration.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, though some paragraphs mix contrasting ideas or contain abrupt transitions. Cohesive devices such as 'On one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader, but referencing is occasionally imprecise, as seen in sentences like 'developing tall apartment made it easier for people to live in a place close to their people.' While the progression of ideas is discernible, the cohesion can feel slightly mechanical, aligning well with the band 6 descriptor profile.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, covering common housing and urban topics such as 'apartment blocks,' 'facilities,' 'environment,' and 'job opportunities.' The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'compact,' 'commute,' and 'detiriod,' but this is accompanied by noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including 'detiriod' instead of 'deteriorated' and 'peice' instead of 'piece.' Although these errors occasionally catch the reader's attention, they do not severely impede communication, which places this performance firmly at band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'developing tall apartment made,' 'The apartments has,' and 'the price of apartment became high.' Punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after periods, also detract from the overall accuracy. Because these errors do not completely obscure the meaning and a mix of structures is present, a band 5.0 is appropriate.
