Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt regarding whether building tall apartment blocks is the best way to provide homes in large cities, presenting both advantages and disadvantages. However, the ideas are underdeveloped and lack adequate extension and examples. Furthermore, the response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, containing only 194 words. This severely limits the depth of the argument and overall task completion. The writer attempts to express a position, but the reasoning is often vague, such as mentioning living standards and social interaction without clear elaboration. To improve, the writer must ensure they write at least 250 words and fully develop each main idea with relevant explanations and real-world examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The essay lacks standard essay structure and relies on bullet points and fragmented lists rather than well-developed paragraphs with clear topic sentences. While there is an attempt to categorise ideas into advantages and disadvantages, the overall logical progression is weak. Cohesive devices are minimal or misused, and referencing is sometimes unclear, such as ambiguous pronoun use. Paragraphing is inappropriate for an academic essay, as the response consists of disjointed notes rather than cohesive prose. To achieve a higher band score, the student should organise their writing into a proper introduction, body paragraphs with distinct central topics, and a conclusion, using logical connectors to link ideas smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, phrases like 'occupancy of place', 'maintain your vote', and 'have will or not' are unnatural and impede clear communication. While the writer attempts to use some less common vocabulary such as 'utilization', 'resources', and 'interaction', the control over these items is weak. Spelling is generally acceptable, but lexical range is limited to everyday terms. To improve, the student should expand their vocabulary related to urban planning and housing, and practice using appropriate collocations and academic phrases instead of translating directly from conversational speech.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, relying heavily on run-on sentences and faulty complex structures. There is a frequent absence of proper punctuation and capitalization, with many sentences joined incorrectly by conjunctions or commas. For example, sentences such as 'large cities have larger space if we have to provide homes to enough people so we don't have to mostly approach for apartment blocks' are confusing and structurally unsound. Errors in tense, subject-verb agreement, and clause structure occur throughout the text, causing difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student needs to focus on sentence boundaries, punctuation, and mastering basic sentence structures before attempting more complex grammatical forms.
