Student answer (Band 6.0)

I believe the most efficient method to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks. This is the best approach, because this will provide space for million of individuals who come from smaller cities or towns for jobs and studies. It will also decrease the cost of living for people. Also, living together in buildings will create better bond between communities.

There are not many opportunities for people in small cities. So they have to move to big cities for jobs and higher studies. The biggest problem those people face is the cost of living in big cities. Because the demand of apartments is more then the actual number of apartments in cities, which led to the high rents and more difficult for those individuals.

In big cities, life is busy for everybody. Most of people do not get time to socialize and meet people living around them. But living in one building provides more ways to interact with individuals living in the same building. This led to a healthy and social community that is very difficult to manage in big cities. Also, tall buildings make the cities look good. And better views in cities attract more businesses, that create more jobs for individuals.

In conclusion, there are only the benefits of building tall apartment blocks in bigger cities to provide homes. It gives public more opportunities to access big cities. Also makes life easier for individuals coming from the small cities and towns to get a better life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt directly by arguing that building tall apartment blocks is the best solution for urban housing shortages, citing benefits such as cost reduction, job accessibility, and community interaction. The position is clear throughout the essay. However, some ideas are somewhat under-developed or touch on tangential points, such as the claim that tall buildings 'make the cities look good' and attract businesses, which strays slightly from the core housing focus. While the main arguments regarding living costs and social bonds are relevant and supported, the arguments lack deeper elaboration or specific examples, placing this response at Band 6 according to the descriptors where relevant ideas are presented but some are under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments, such as living costs in the second paragraph and social/aesthetic aspects in the third. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. The overuse of repetitive transitional devices like 'Also' at the beginning of sentences (seen multiple times) and minor referencing issues, such as 'This is the best approach, because this will...', detract from a smoother flow of ideas. Overall, the logical progression is present, but the cohesive devices require greater flexibility and variety to reach a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms such as 'efficient method', 'cost of living', and 'socialize'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though these are sometimes accompanied by inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, or preposition usage, such as 'create better bond' instead of 'create a better bond' and 'demand of apartments is more then' instead of 'demand for apartments is greater than'. Spelling is generally accurate, but lexical errors and awkward phrasing occasionally surface. Because the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the message despite these errors, a score of 6.0 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses introduced by 'because', 'that', and 'while'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('provide space for million of individuals', 'make the cities look good'), comparative structures ('more then the actual number'), and subject-verb agreement. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but sentence structures often feel repetitive or slightly disjointed due to grammatical slips. These errors do not seriously impede overall communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band score where error-free sentences would be more frequent.
