Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that the best way to provide adequate housing in congested urban areas is to build large apartment blocks. I agree with this statement because nowadays cities are overpopulated and another reason is that the property prices are now higher.

Firstly, the reason I agree with this statement is that the world is developing rapidly and lots of industries are now established in highly dense cities. Many people are moving to large cities in search of jobs, a better quality of life and their children's education. For example, large cities like Beijing and Delhi which are densely populated to manage all the people in such areas, we should build large apartment buildings. Furthermore, this would alleviate homelessness and all are living in their own home.

Another reason to support this statement is that nowadays property prices have skyrocketed. The property sector is now not affordable for everyone. For instance, for low-income families who are living in challenging circumstances for them to buy land and build their own home is very difficult. Hence, this is the best alternative. Owning a home gives the sense of security and stability for such families. Moreover, money is not lost on renting and this can be used for other purposes. Furthermore, these apartments are available at relatively affordable prices and to buy them is easy for low-income families.

In conclusion, the good initiative in populated cities is to build large apartments. I agree with this statement because cities are overcrowded and property prices are much higher. Therefore, building large apartments is a good option and available at possible low prices.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by stating a clear position of agreement regarding the construction of tall apartment blocks in large cities. The writer introduces two main supporting ideas: overpopulation and rising property prices. However, these ideas are somewhat under-developed and lack extended real-world examples or deep analysis. For instance, the mention of Beijing and Delhi is brief and functions more as a list than a fully explored argument. The second body paragraph successfully discusses low-income families and homeownership benefits, fulfilling the requirement of presenting a well-reasoned argument, but it tends to generalise rather than thoroughly extend the points. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, earning a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', 'Another reason', and 'In conclusion' are used to structure the text, though they are at times mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. However, referencing and logical progression can be slightly disjointed, such as in the sentence 'For example, large cities like Beijing and Delhi which are densely populated to manage all the people in such areas, we should build large apartment buildings,' where the grammatical structure disrupts the flow. These characteristics align with the Band 6 descriptor for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'congested urban areas', 'overpopulated', 'skyrocketed', and 'stability'. There are, however, some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'money is not lost on renting' and 'available at possible low prices', which slightly affect naturalness. Spelling is generally accurate throughout the essay. While the writer attempts less common vocabulary, occasional awkward phrasings limit the score to a Band 6.0, as the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points but lacks the precision and flexibility found at higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'Many people are moving to large cities in search of jobs...'. Nevertheless, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'for them to buy land and build their own home is very difficult' and the dangling construction in 'for example, large cities like Beijing and Delhi which are densely populated to manage all the people in such areas, we should build large apartment buildings.' Punctuation is generally acceptable, and errors rarely impede overall communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.
