Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is argued that the best way to provide adequate housing in congested urban areas is to build large apartment blocks. I agree with this statement because nowadays cities are overpopulated and another reason is the property prices are now higher.
Firstly, the reason I agree with this statement is that the world is developing rapidly and lots of industries are now established in densely populated cities. Many people are moving to large cities in search of jobs, a better quality of life and their children's education. For example, large cities like Beijing and Delhi which are densely populated, to manage all the people we should build large apartment buildings in such areas. Furthermore, this would alleviate homelessness and everyone is living in their own home.
Another reason to support this statement is that nowadays property prices have skyrocketed. The property sector is no longer affordable for everyone. For instance, for low-income families who are living in challenging circumstances for them, to buy land and build their own home is very difficult. Hence, this is the best alternative. Owning a home gives a sense of security and stability for such families. Moreover, money is not lost on renting and this can be used for other purposes. Furthermore, these apartments are available at relatively affordable prices and to buy them is easy for low-income families.
In conclusion, the good initiative in populated cities is to build large apartments. I agree with this statement because cities are overcrowded and property prices are much higher. Therefore, building large apartments is a good option and available at possible low prices.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position agreeing with the statement and providing reasons to support it. The writer identifies urban overpopulation and high property prices as the main arguments for building tall apartment blocks. Examples such as Beijing and Delhi are provided, and the ideas are extended with points regarding homelessness and financial stability for low-income families. However, some arguments tend to over-generalise, such as stating that everyone will live in their own home, which lacks nuance. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed with a clear position, fitting comfortably into the Band 6.0 or 6.5 criteria. Because the ideas are relevant and generally well-extended, it meets the requirements for a Band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay is coherent with an overall logical arrangement. The student uses basic cohesive devices like "Firstly", "Another reason", and "In conclusion" to signal the structure of the essay. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical, and referencing is not always completely clear, such as in the sentence "for low-income families who are living in challenging circumstances for them, to buy land..." where the grammatical structure disrupts the flow. Progression is generally clear throughout, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as "congested urban areas", "overpopulated", "infrastructure equivalents", and "skyrocketed". There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though they occasionally feature minor word choice or collocation errors, such as "the good initiative in populated cities". Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. This performance demonstrates the characteristics of Band 6.0, providing a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss housing and urbanisation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer attempts complex structures, such as relative clauses and conditional-like constructions, though some grammatical inaccuracies appear, such as "for low-income families who are living in challenging circumstances for them, to buy land..." which suffers from a dangling structure. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors exist, they rarely impede communication. The control of grammar corresponds to Band 6, featuring a mix of error-free sentences alongside frequent minor slips in more complex sentence attempts.
