Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often claimed that they best way to solve the need for more homes is to build tall apartments block in big cities.

Overall, I agree with this statement, because of two main reasons. Firstly, tall apartment complexes consumes very less space on land, so we can create more homes by increasing the number of buildings in a given land space. And secondly, it is cost effective as well because providing amenities to homes i.e drainage system, electricity and gas for cooking etc becomes cheaper in buildings when compared with providing the same things to seperate houses spanning in a city.

Land in metropolitan cities is expensive and mostly occupied by commercial projects in a city, leaving less space for houses to be built. Creating tall skyline, solves the problem of unavailibity of land for homes by enabling a large number of homes to be built, stacked on top of each other, thus getting taller in height but using less horizental space. It saves land for other apartment complexes or commecrial projects as well. For example, cin big cities like New York, where there are massive buildings adjusting a huge number of people and providing a lot of apartments to people to live. If the New York skyline was not created, it wouldn't be able to hold so many people and businesses.

Creating tall buildings to hold a more houses is also cost effective and profitable, so most builders invest in creating such complexes, thus, more homes are available for the massive nmber of people attracted towards big cities. As most of the land is commercial in populous cities, creating single owner homes, which spans on horizantal land costs a lot of money. Thus, creating tall complexes solve this problem because it is cheaper to own a home in a complex than to live seperately on your own land. For example, in a city Dubai, Most of its popluation in living in tall apartments and only a few rich elites are living on seperate homes.

In conclusion, large apartments are the best way to use the available land effectively, occuping more houses and leaving the rest of the land for even more apartment blocks. Also it is cost effective as well, due to which many people can afford living indoors and avoid homelessness.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position that tall apartment blocks are the best solution for providing enough homes in large cities. The writer supports this stance with two main supporting arguments: efficient land usage and cost-effectiveness. Ideas are extended with examples, such as referencing New York and Dubai. While the development is generally clear and relevant, some ideas tend to be slightly repetitive, leaning towards a Band 6.5 or Band 7 description. However, because the position is maintained throughout and all parts of the prompt are fully addressed with supporting examples, the response comfortably earns a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response features a clear overall progression with a logical layout, including a distinct introduction, body paragraphs addressing specific reasons, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Firstly', 'And secondly', 'Thus', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, and some cohesive links are used mechanically (e.g., repeating 'Thus' and 'creating' excessively), which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Overall, the logical organization and clear progression fit the Band 6.5 or 7 descriptors, warranting a Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'metropolitan cities', 'commercial projects', 'amenities', and 'population'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is sometimes accompanied by awkward collocations or lexical errors, such as 'tall apartments block', 'consumes very less space', and 'adjusting a huge number of people'. Spelling errors like 'unavailibity', 'horizental', and 'popluation' also occur. These errors do not impede communication, placing the vocabulary performance securely at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures (e.g., 'If the New York skyline was not created, it wouldn't be able to hold...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors in article usage, pluralisation, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'they best way', 'complexes consumes', 'seperate houses spanning in a city', and 'In a city Dubai'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but structural inaccuracies are noticeable throughout. Because the majority of sentences contain minor slips or errors that occasionally strain comprehension, the response aligns best with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
