Student answer (Band 6.0)
In certain societies, obesity is considered a major issue. Some people argue that unhealthy food advertising has a significant impact on this problem and should therefore be banned. However, others believe that advertising does not contribute significantly to obesity and should not be banned. This essay will discuss both views and give my opinion.
To begin with, some people believe that unhealthy food advertising should be banned because it encourages people, especially children, to eat unhealthy food. The main reason is that advertising companies often target children because they are attracted to colourful advertisements and famous celebrities. As a result, children may develop unhealthy eating habits from an early age, which can eventually lead to obesity and other health problems. Therefore, banning such advertisements could help create a healthier society and reduce pressure on hospitals.
On the other hand, others believe that advertising is not the main cause of obesity because people are responsible for their own food choices. For instance, if a person knows which foods are healthy for them, they can avoid unhealthy products even if they see advertisements for them. In addition, some people believe that governments should build exercise areas in every town because many individuals do not exercise regularly. Providing accessible places for physical activity could encourage people to exercise more often and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
From my perspective, individuals should take responsibility for their health and make sensible decisions about what they eat. However, governments should also encourage healthy lifestyles by providing exercise facilities and educating people about healthy diets. In this way, people can make better choices and reduce the risk of obesity.
To conclude, although unhealthy food advertising may influence people's eating habits, I believe that individuals and governments both have a role to play in tackling obesity. People should choose healthy food and exercise regularly, while governments should provide facilities and promote healthy lifestyles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response is largely off-topic for this task. The writing prompt specifically asks whether the best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks. However, the student has completely misinterpreted the prompt and instead written an essay about whether unhealthy food advertising should be banned to tackle obesity. Because the core prompt regarding urban housing and tall apartment blocks is entirely unaddressed, the response falls significantly short of addressing all parts of the task. While the essay format is maintained with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion discussing a social issue, the complete irrelevance of the content to the specific housing question means the main task requirements are only minimally met.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical structure that guides the reader through the text. The response is divided into appropriate paragraphs, featuring a clear introduction, distinct body paragraphs presenting contrasting views, a personal perspective paragraph, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect ideas, such as 'To begin with,' 'On the other hand,' 'In addition,' and 'To conclude.' However, referencing and progression can sometimes feel slightly mechanical rather than entirely seamless, which is characteristic of this level. While the ideas discussed are off-topic regarding the actual prompt, the internal organisation and paragraphing within the text itself are clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used throughout the essay displays an adequate range for the task, allowing the writer to discuss social issues with reasonable clarity. The student successfully attempts less common vocabulary items, such as 'obesity,' 'unhealthy eating habits,' 'unhealthy food advertising,' and 'maintain a healthy lifestyle.' There are occasional minor inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, but these do not impede communication. Spelling and word forms are generally well-controlled. To move towards a higher band, the writer would need to incorporate a wider variety of more sophisticated, less common lexical items with precise collocation and stylistic awareness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
This criterion represents the strongest aspect of the writing. The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over grammatical structures. The student successfully uses complex clauses, such as conditional structures ('if a person knows which foods are healthy for them, they can avoid unhealthy products') and relative clauses ('which can eventually lead to obesity'). There are frequent error-free sentences, and control of grammar and punctuation is generally solid. While a few minor errors persist, the grammatical range is handled well and communication is never impeded by structural flaws.
