Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt regarding tall apartment blocks, but it falls well short of the word count requirement, reaching only 168 words out of the minimum 250. Because of this length limitation, the position is only partially articulated, and the ideas presented are limited and under-developed. For example, points regarding economic impacts and infrastructure such as 'filter water, electricity' are introduced briefly without sufficient explanation or specific examples to extend the argument. To improve to a higher band, the writer must ensure they meet the minimum word count and fully elaborate on each supporting point with detailed explanations and relevant examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation evident through the use of transition markers like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Morever', but there is a lack of clear overall progression due to the abrupt ending and choppy sentence structure. Cohesive devices are occasionally inaccurate or repetitive, and referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly in how paragraphs transition from urban sprawl to municipal utilities. Furthermore, paragraphing is underdeveloped; the text reads largely as a single block rather than distinct, logically structured paragraphs with clear topic sentences. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to group ideas into well-defined paragraphs and use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally to guide the reader smoothly through the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. There are frequent spelling and word form mistakes, such as 'accomodation' instead of accommodation, 'easiet' instead of easiest, 'bulid' instead of build, and 'tragedic' instead of tragic. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'diverse effect' and 'budget friendly', but misuse and inaccuracies in collocation remain apparent throughout the text. To reach the next level, the writer must expand their lexical range, demonstrate greater control over less common vocabulary and collocations, and eliminate basic spelling errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic sentence patterns. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors that cause difficulty, such as missing articles ('build tall apartment'), incorrect prepositions, and severe run-on errors like 'Firstly.if we bulid new house...'. Punctuation is also problematic, with missing spaces after periods and commas, and subject-verb agreement errors such as 'building house is more expensive rather than building tall apartments which has'. To move up a band, the writer needs to employ a wider mix of complex structures with improved accuracy, paying closer attention to punctuation, verb forms, and articles.
