Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response only minimally addresses the task, touching upon the topic of building tall apartment blocks in cities, but it fails to develop a clear position. Furthermore, the writing falls significantly short of the required word count, totaling only 163 words against the minimum of 250 words. The ideas presented, such as the shortage of land, high property prices, and maintenance costs, are underdeveloped and presented in a fragmented manner without proper examples or extended explanation. To improve towards a higher band, the writer must ensure that the word count requirement is fully met, state a clear position on the prompt, and develop each main idea with relevant supporting arguments and explanations in separate paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
Information and ideas are not arranged coherently in this response. The text is written as a single, continuous run-on sentence without any paragraph breaks or logical structuring. Cohesive devices are largely absent, making it difficult for the reader to follow a clear progression of thoughts. For instance, phrases like 'among all this issues' and 'each things has its own pros and cons' fail to effectively link ideas together. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to group ideas into distinct paragraphs, such as an introduction, body paragraphs with distinct points, and a conclusion, while using a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, reflecting a limited range that strains the reader's comprehension. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'now a days', 'conjusted', 'bulind', 'appartment', and 'popoulation'. While the writer attempts to discuss housing challenges and building costs, the inaccurate word forms and spelling mistakes impede smooth communication. To move up to the next band, the student must develop a wider vocabulary range, pay closer attention to standard spelling rules, and correctly use collocations and word forms, such as distinguishing between adjectives and nouns like 'congested' and 'congestion'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting primarily of a single, overly long sentence that strings multiple clauses together without correct punctuation. Errors are frequent and often distort the intended meaning, notably the complete absence of full stops, missing auxiliary verbs, and incorrect subject-verb agreement as seen in 'people facing many issue' and 'every person having there dream'. Complex structures are attempted unsuccessfully due to faulty punctuation and poor clause connection. To improve, the writer must focus on basic sentence construction, using correct end-of-sentence punctuation, and ensuring accurate verb forms and agreement across simple and compound sentences.
