IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The statement is strong to agree with. Through providing tall apartment blocks, more people can stay within less space.

In large cities, there are already crowded with people and houses. If each family consume a piece of land, it will be difficult to provide house to all.

Moreover people living in same place also helps to build social relationship. Staying alone can make people distant from society Therefore it is also good for children to stay in social environment.

On the other hand, it can be problematic to some people who prefers to stay alone. Then tall buildings can be risky sometimes during disasters such as earthquake or fire.

There is both sides of each phenomenon. It is to see that which solution can be provided easily. If there are enough space to provide enough home to peoples, then it can be a good solution. But if there is not enough land then tall apartment blocks are also good.

Overall depending on situation both can be a good solution.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

This response sits at this band because the length requirement is not met, with the essay containing only 169 words against the minimum of 250 words. Furthermore, the task is addressed only partially. While the writer attempts to present a position on tall apartment blocks, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, points regarding social relationships and natural disasters are introduced briefly without sufficient explanation or specific examples. The position is also somewhat unclear by the end of the text, as the conclusion appears neutral rather than maintaining a clear stance on whether high-rise buildings are the best solution.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation evident in the division of paragraphs, separating advantages and disadvantages, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes inadequate or repetitive, such as starting multiple sentences with 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'There is'. Paragraphing is attempted, but some paragraphs consist of only single sentences, which disrupts the flow of the argument. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, leaving the reader to deduce connections between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary range is limited but minimally adequate for basic communication. The writer uses simple terms such as 'good solution', 'large cities', and 'tall buildings'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations that cause some difficulty for the reader, such as 'each family consume a piece of land', 'provide house to all', and 'social environment' instead of 'a social environment'. Word forms are occasionally inaccurate, for example 'prefers' instead of 'prefer' regarding plural subjects, though this also touches upon grammatical agreement.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with occasional, mostly faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent errors in grammar, articles, and prepositions that can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include 'there are already crowded with people' (incorrect passive/existential structure), 'provide house to peoples' (pluralisation error), 'Enough space to provide enough home' (repetition and article omission), and 'It is to see that which solution' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing full stops or commas in complex sentences.
