Student answer (Band 5.5)

The most convenient way to give enough homes in big cities is only possible when tall building are bilt by apartment blocks. I partly agree with this view because taller buildings can provide as many homes as require but buildings could be dangerous or cause unwanted problems of managment.

Firstly tall buildings have several benifits such as they cover less area and provide more homes for the people. By using small area we can avoide from the deforestation and ruining the open spaces their will be crops in near future. These days population of the urban areas is increasing rapidly so tall buildings provide homes to those people who newly shifted in cities or want to shift. People get social interactions so they might improve their behavior or confidence. They get similar type of facilities and can find shops of daily household in same building.

Secondly tall buildings have some drawbacks for example very difficult to provide facilities to that much people at same building. It affected people privacy on large scale and might increase chances of crimes like stole something. Moreover, they don't have parks and gardens in buildings. Some people avoide high dense areas because they feel exausted in those areas. They might do not get enough oxygen. Also big buildings do not have good vantilation system because of this rooms might have high temperatures in summers.

In conclusion, tall buildings have benifits such as many people get homes and same facilities however it has some drawbacks like difficulity in managment and do not have enough space for gardens.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by expressing a partial agreement with the statement about tall apartment blocks. The position is visible in the introduction and conclusion, though it lacks deep clarity at times. The ideas presented are somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, the point regarding social interactions and behavior is introduced briefly without sufficient expansion or relevant examples. Similarly, the drawbacks mentioned, such as privacy issues and ventilation problems, remain basic assertions rather than fully explored arguments. While the main parts of the task are touched upon, the lack of thorough development and extension keeps the response at this level, as ideas tend to be general and repetitive without driving the argument forward significantly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is a basic logical organization to the essay, evident in the division into an introduction, two body paragraphs focusing on benefits and drawbacks respectively, and a conclusion. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression throughout the text. Cohesive devices are used, but they tend to be repetitive or somewhat mechanical, such as relying heavily on 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' to sequence points. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs can be disjointed, with referencing not always clear, as seen in abrupt shifts between ideas like ventilation and high temperatures in the third paragraph. Overall, the structural framework is visible, but the flow between sentences and ideas needs smoother transitions to achieve higher levels of coherence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'deforestation', 'urban areas', and 'ventilation', but this is balanced by noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of lexical inaccuracies include 'bilt' instead of 'built', 'benifits' instead of 'benefits', 'managment' instead of 'management', and the incorrect collocation 'stole something' instead of 'theft' or 'crime'. Furthermore, phrasing like 'newly shifted in cities' lacks natural collocation. These frequent slips in spelling and word choice restrict the lexical range and precision required for more advanced levels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside some attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in verb forms, tenses, article usage, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. Examples include 'tall building are bilt by apartment blocks', 'provide as many homes as require', 'avide from the deforestation', 'their will be crops', and 'They might do not get enough oxygen'. Punctuation is also weak, with missing commas separating clauses and run-on tendencies. These frequent grammatical errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader throughout the text, aligning with the expected characteristics of this band.
