Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that constructing high-rise apartment buildings is the most effective way to provide sufficient housing for the growing population of major cities. In upcoming paragraphs i will agree with this statement.

To commence with, one major reason is that high-rise apartment buildings can accommodate a large number of people in a limited area.To elaborate it,This means that instead of constructing many separate houses that require large areas of land, the government can build tall apartment blocks to accommodate hundreds of families in one building. For example,in cities like Karachi and Lahore, high-rise apartment buildings can provide homes for many families in a limited area, helping to address the shortage of housing. As a result,As a result, this can reduce the housing shortage in major cities, make better use of limited land, and enable more people to find suitable places to live.

Furthermore, another important reason is that high-rise apartment buildings can reduce housing costs for many families. To explain it,this is particularly helpful for low- and middle-income families who struggle to afford independent houses in large cities. For instance,in cities like Islamabad, apartment buildings can provide relatively affordable accommodation for students, young professionals, and small families. As a consequence, more people can afford to buy or rent a home, which can help reduce homelessness and improve people's living standards.

In conclusion, I agree that building tall apartment blocks is an effective way to provide enough housing in large cities. They can accommodate more people in limited spaces and make housing more affordable for low- and middle-income families.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on building tall apartment blocks and supporting it with relevant arguments. You outline how high-rises save space and reduce housing costs, using examples from cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. However, the development of your ideas is uneven, which prevents a higher score. While your first body paragraph touches on land efficiency, the explanation contains repetitive elements, such as repeating 'As a result, As a result' and restating similar points about limited space. To reach the next level, you need to extend your supporting ideas more fully and maintain a consistent depth of analysis across all body paragraphs without relying on redundant phrasing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement, and the reader can easily follow your general stance. You use standard paragraphing, dividing your thoughts logically into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and faulty. For instance, your transitional phrases like 'To commence with, one major reason is' lack proper spacing after commas, and referencing becomes repetitive with phrases like 'To elaborate it' and 'To explain it'. Furthermore, the repetition of 'As a result,As a result,' indicates a mechanical use of cohesive devices rather than a smooth progression of ideas. To achieve a higher band, you should employ a wider and more natural variety of linking words and ensure seamless referencing between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You display an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to housing and urbanization, such as 'accommodate', 'housing shortage', 'low- and middle-income families', and 'homelessness'. You also attempt some less common lexical items, such as 'independent houses' and 'living standards'. However, there are noticeable limitations and occasional inaccuracies in word choice and punctuation attached to your vocabulary use. For example, spacing issues like missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'building. For example,in cities') show a lack of precision. To move to a higher band, you must incorporate a more flexible and sophisticated range of less common vocabulary with precise collocations and ensure flawless mechanical control over your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

Your writing shows a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with adequate attempts to express conditional or multi-clause thoughts, such as 'which can help reduce homelessness and improve people's living standards.' However, you make several errors in grammar and punctuation that prevent a higher score. There are frequent punctuation and spacing errors throughout your text, such as missing spaces after periods and commas, and lower-case letters where capitals are needed (e.g., starting 'i will agree' in the introduction). Additionally, some structural patterns feel repetitive. To reach the next band, you need to demonstrate a wider variety of error-free complex structures and eliminate basic mechanical and punctuation errors.
