Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, many large cities are facing housing shortage due to rapid population growth. Some people believe that constructing high-rise buildings is the most effective way to provide homes for residents. Overall, people could face some issues because of tall apartments, but I strongly agree with this statement because tall buildings can provide many opportunities and make better use of limited land. Alongside, they allow more people to live in a convenient locations.

Firstly, building high-rise apartments need only limitted space. Nowadays, many large cities do not have enough space to build more houses for individuals. So this will be the best solution to the lack of space in cities. Tall apartments can accommodate hundreds of families on a small piece of land. As a result, governments can provide housing for many people without expanding the city.

Secondly, this type of apartment are often located close to the workplaces, schools, hospitals, and transportations. It is very easy to get their destination and this allows residents to spend less time travelling. Apart from that, many families can live in this one building and it gives them the chance to create strong bonding with their neighbours.

However, there are also some drawbacks of high-rise building. For instance, there will be less sun light becuse of the tall apartments. Not only that, but also high-rise blocks may lead to overcrowding or reduce privacy. More importantly, If any natural disaster occurs, then it will be tough to evacuate the whole building instantly. While it can happens if the apartment blocks are poorly desgined. Many construction organizations provides high skills worker and architecture to make a secure building and they install many advanced equipment to prevent this types of risk .

In conclusion, despite having some drawbacks, I firmly believe that constructing tall buildings can make peoples life more convenient and also most effective way to reduce housing shortage. They make efficient use of limitted land, provide accommodation for large number of people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, which fully meets the descriptor for the lower band while showing glimpses of higher-level task handling. The main arguments are generally relevant, supporting the idea that high-rise buildings solve housing shortages and make better use of space. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the paragraph on convenience and proximity to workplaces touches upon important points like transport and community bonding, but these are stated rather than deeply extended with specific examples or explanations. Similarly, the counter-arguments regarding safety and natural disasters are raised in the fourth paragraph but remain slightly generalised and rushed. To reach the next level, the writer should ensure that every main idea is thoroughly elaborated with fully developed explanations or concrete illustrations rather than brief assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response displays a coherent overall arrangement and logical progression, successfully grouping ideas into paragraphs with clear introductory and concluding remarks. Each body paragraph opens with a signposting device such as 'Firstly' or 'Secondly' to guide the reader through the argument. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen in transitions like 'Alongside, they allow more people...' which sounds unnatural, and referencing is not always clear, such as using 'this will be the best solution' where the exact antecedent is slightly loose. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate advantages, disadvantages, and the conclusion, but to achieve a higher band, the writer must employ a wider, more flexible range of cohesive devices without relying on repetitive formulas, ensuring that transitions flow smoothly and unobtrusively.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'accommodation', 'overcrowding', and 'evacuate'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and word forms throughout the essay. Examples of errors include 'housing shortage' (missing an article), 'limitted' (spelling error), 'transportations' (incorrect plural usage of an uncountable noun), 'bescuse' (spelling error), and 'desgined' (spelling error). Furthermore, phrases like 'create strong bonding' could be expressed more naturally. These errors do not seriously impede communication, reflecting a solid Band six performance, but to progress further, the writer must improve precision in word choice and eliminate basic spelling and morphological errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors present, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('this type of apartment are often located'), missing articles ('is very easy to get their destination'), and errors in prepositional or clause patterns ('While it can happens if the apartment blocks are poorly desgined'). Punctuation and tense control also occasionally slip, as seen in mixed conditional or modal patterns ('If any natural disaster occurs, then it will be tough... While it can happens'). Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To attain a higher band, the writer needs to produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over grammatical agreements and plurals.
