Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially, outlining both the advantages and disadvantages of tall apartment blocks, but the position remains somewhat underdeveloped and simplistic. While you acknowledge the topic and present general ideas such as security, community interaction, and the lack of privacy or natural air, these points are repetitive and lack extension with specific examples. For instance, mentioning that people can play sports or support each other in tough times touches on relevant themes, but the reasoning is repetitive and lacks depth. To move up to a higher level, you need to present a clearer, more sustained position throughout the essay and extend your main ideas with well-developed supporting arguments rather than relying on brief, generalised statements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation in this response, as it is divided into an introduction, body paragraphs addressing advantages and disadvantages, and a short conclusion. However, there is no clear overall progression of ideas, and the logical flow between sentences feels somewhat mechanical. Cohesive devices are used minimally or repetitively, such as the repeated phrase 'There are some advantages' and 'In tall appartments', which makes the structure feel formulaic rather than naturally cohesive. Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, and paragraphing could be managed more effectively to separate distinct points. To achieve a higher score, you should ensure a smoother progression of ideas from one paragraph to the next and employ a wider, more accurate variety of cohesive ties.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, containing noticeable errors that occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. There are frequent spelling errors and incorrect word forms, such as 'countinues' instead of continue, 'building' instead of build, and 'appartment' instead of apartment. Other lexical inaccuracies include 'housing socities' and 'sport activites', alongside awkward word choices like 'stoping the air' and 'surounding with peoples'. You rely heavily on basic, repetitive vocabulary throughout the essay. To improve your lexical score, you must focus on accurate spelling, correct word formation, and expanding your range of vocabulary to include less common lexical items with appropriate collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex structures that are often faulty. There are persistent errors in grammar throughout the response, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'large cities countinues to building', missing articles ('in tall home appartmets'), and incorrect verb forms ('they cant get natural air as tall buildings stoping the air'). Punctuation is also problematic in places, with comma splices and missing apostrophes (e.g., 'cant', 'doesnt'). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To reach the next band, you need to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence forms with improved grammatical control and significantly reduce the frequency of basic structural errors.
