Student answer (Band 6.0)

Major or large cities offer significantly more oppurtunities for everyone. This leads to a flock of people migrating from small cities to improve their living standards and create a better future for themselves. Accomodating all these people can be a hassle, as the number of people can exceed the available space to construct homes. A more workable solution to this problem is to create tall apartment blocks. Each building can accomodate numerous families without occupying much space.

Major cities like, New York City, Karachi and Delhi accomodate millions of people. Apartment complex in such cities have proved to be effective in managing this issue. However, some apartment complex like in China, have space such small that is physically impossible to sustain a lifestyle there. Governments should issue a clear set of by-laws that state how an ideal complex must be constructed. Contractors and landlords exploit individuals need for a home and construct complexes that do not hold up to the standard of living.

An ideal apartment complex should offer parking, safe environment and a communal open space for physical activites. This ensures people are not confined to their apartments, improving their mental and physical health. Apartments can be more affordable as compared to individual homes, which require a lot space. Apartment complex also decrease deforestration as their is less need for space for more housing societys. Pakistan is experiencing a decline in agricultural land as more and more land is being converted into residential colonies. Apartment complex can effectively deal with this issue for a lot of countries

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position regarding tall apartment blocks as a solution for urban housing. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as infrastructure regulations, community spaces, and environmental preservation in countries like Pakistan. However, some ideas remain under-developed or briefly stated rather than fully extended. For instance, the point about regulations and contractors exploiting individuals' needs is mentioned in the second paragraph but not thoroughly explored, which is characteristic of this level. Similarly, the example of agricultural land conversion in Pakistan touches upon a strong argument regarding deforestation and land use, but it requires deeper elaboration to reach a higher standard. The position remains consistent throughout the essay, effectively satisfying the core requirements while showing glimpses of a more fully developed discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression from introducing the migration trend to discussing apartment living, standards of construction, and environmental impacts. Paragraphing is utilised to group related ideas, such as grouping the challenges of construction in the second paragraph and the benefits of ideal complexes in the third. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or features faulty referencing. For example, expressions like 'Apartment complex also decrease...' and 'their is less need' reveal weaker cohesive flow and minor transitional gaps between sentences. Pronoun referencing and linking words could be managed more flexibly to achieve a smoother, more natural progression throughout the response. Overall, the logical structure is evident, but the cohesive devices require greater precision and variety.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main arguments regarding urbanisation and housing solutions. The student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'migrating', 'infrastructure', and 'deforestation', showing an ambition to vary word choice. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-form errors that reflect a lower band, including 'oppurtunities', 'Accomodating', 'accomodate', 'complex' used instead of the plural 'complexes', and 'their' instead of 'there'. Furthermore, collocation and word choice are occasionally imprecise, such as 'space such small that is physically impossible'. These inaccuracies do not entirely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score, demonstrating an adequate range with recurring slips in spelling and form.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional-like arguments to express ideas. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples of grammatical lapses include missing articles, such as 'safe environment' instead of 'a safe environment', and minor pluralisation issues like 'individual homes, which require a lot space' missing a preposition. The control of verb forms and sentence structures shows a workable competence, producing a mixture of error-free clauses alongside occasional structural slips. To progress further, the writer needs to enhance sentence variety and eliminate minor systemic errors in articles and prepositions.
