Student answer (Band 6.0)

The importance of tall buildings is a controversial topic, which now has become the centre of discussion. Some people find this development beneficial, while others still reject this notion. this essay highlights the facts in the favour of apartment blocks in big cities.

The population in big cities is increasing tremendously. The majority of people are now prefer to live in cities, as there are more opportunities available for living and education as well. In such situations, it is nearly impossible for every family to accomodate in an individual house. The construction of apartment blocks is a balanced solution for this problem. For instance, if a single house is built on a specific land, it will be accomodated by only one family. However, if there is a building with multiple apartment, it will increases the number of residencies for more families.

The other benefit could be the privacy. Nowadays, a lot of people want to live in their own private space instead of living in a joint family. The concept of nuclear system instead of joint family system has also increases the demand for more space, which could be very hard to find in a large city. Meanwhile, tall buildings provide equal number of resources to more people living in a certain area. For example, if someone wants to live in an area facing park or near to their college or office, having an appartment building close to their desired location can increases the availability of same resource for more than one individual at same period.

In conclusion, in order to meet the needs of people living in larger cities, building large apartment blocks is a wise approach.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting a clear position agreeing with the statement, supported by relevant ideas. However, some aspects are developed more fully than others. For instance, the first body paragraph clearly explains how apartment blocks increase residential capacity given urban population growth. On the other hand, the second body paragraph introduces privacy and the nuclear family concept, but the explanation regarding resource availability and proximity to parks or offices is somewhat unclear and under-developed. To reach a higher level, every main idea needs to be fully extended and supported with clear, logical reasoning rather than shifting quickly between concepts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct main points, such as population density in the first body paragraph and lifestyle preferences in the second. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the transitional phrase 'The other benefit could be' feels slightly simplistic, and referencing is not always clear, such as how the discussion on nuclear families connects back to the core argument of building tall blocks. To improve further, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices to establish a smoother logical progression between sentences and ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'tremendously' and 'residential'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that reflect a lack of precision. For instance, the word 'accomodate' is misspelled, 'multiple apartment' lacks a plural, and 'appartment' contains an extra letter. Additionally, phrases like 'equal number of resources' are slightly unnatural in this context. These errors do not impede communication, but to achieve a higher score, the writer must demonstrate greater control over word forms, spellings, and collocations when attempting more sophisticated terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses and relative clauses effectively. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text. These include subject-verb agreement issues and article misuse, such as in the opening sentence 'this essay highlights the facts in the favour', as well as tense and pattern errors like 'are now prefer to live' and 'it will increases'. Punctuation and minor structural slips also occur. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they prevent the writing from achieving error-free sentence frequency. Improving grammatical accuracy and refining complex sentence patterns will elevate this aspect of the writing.
