Student answer (Band 6.0)
IN THIS FAST MOVING GENERATION,THE RAPID GROWTH OF URBAN POPULATION HAS CREATED DEMAND FOR HOUSING SECTORS IN MANY LARGE CITIES. I PARTIALLY AGREE WITH THIS STATEMENT AND I AM GOING DISCUSS BOTH THE VIEWS IN THIS ESSAY.
THERE ARE SEVERAL REASONS WHY TALL HOUSING BUILDING CAN BE THE BEST SOLUTION FOR HOUSING PROBLEMS IN LARGE CITIES. FIRSTLY, IN MANY CITES THERE IS LIMITED SPACE FOR LAND AND BUILDING HIGH RISE APARTMENTS UPWARDS ALLOWS A LARGE NUMBER OF FAMILIES TO LIVE IN SMALL AREAS, SO THAT WE CAN UTILISE THE LAND PROPERLY. FURTHERMORE, WHEN PEOPLE LIVE TOGETHER, GOVERNMENTS CAN PROVIDE ESSENTIAL INFRASTRUCTURE SUCH AS PUBLIC TRASPORT, ELECTRICITY AND WATER. FOR INSTANCE, CITIES LIKE SINGAPORE HAS VERY LIMITED LAND, THEY HAVE ACCOMMODATED MANY PEOPLE IN HIGH-RISE APARTMENTS IN SMALL AREAS.
HOWEVER, RELYING ON TALL APARTMENTS CAN CREATE MANY PROBLEMS. IF MANY PEOPLE LIVE IN ONE PLACE THE QUALITY OF LIFE GETS REDUCED BECAUSE PEOPLE MAY HAVE LIMITED ACCESS TO THEIR PRIVATE SPACE SUCH AS GARDENS AND OPEN SPACES. FOR FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN, LIVING IN A CROWDED PLACE MAY FACE PROBLEMS WITH TRANSPORT, PLAYGROUND AND SCHOOLS. THEREFORE, GOVERNMENTS SHOULD CONSIDER ALTERNATIVES SUCH AS TOWNHOUSES AND SUBURBAN COMMUNITIES. IMPORVING PUBLIC TRANSPORT MAY HELP MANY PEOPLE WHO ARE LIVING OUTSIDE CITY CENTRES HAVING CONVENIENT ACCESS TO THEIR EMPLOYMENT AND EDUCATION.
IN CONCLUSION, TALL BUILDINGS CAN PLAY AN VITAL ROLE TO ADDRESS SHORTAGE OF HOUSING PROBLEMS, I DO NOT BELIEVE THEY ARE BEST SOLUTION IN EVERY SITUTION. A COMBINATION OF TALL BUILDINGS AND MEDIUM-RISE HOUSES TOGETHER WITH GOOD PLANNING WOULD PROVIDE BALANCED APPROACH TO MEETING HOUSING NEEDS OF GROWING CITIES.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully presenting a clear, partially agreed position from the introduction through to the conclusion. The ideas are generally relevant, such as discussing land utilisation and infrastructure benefits in Singapore, as well as the drawbacks regarding quality of life and overcrowding. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the arguments concerning the lack of private space and the need for suburban communities are introduced but remain somewhat under-developed, lacking extended elaboration or specific examples. This balances out the fully met elements, keeping the task response firmly within the expected performance range.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression of ideas from introduction, to body paragraphs, to a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct perspective. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "FIRSTLY", "FURTHERMORE", "HOWEVER", and "THEREFORE". However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally a bit mechanical, and some phrasing creates slight abruptness in the flow of transitions between contrasting points, fulfilling the requirements for a clear logical structure with minor mechanical limitations.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as "urban population", "infrastructure", and "suburban communities". However, there are noticeable spelling, word choice, and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as writing "CITIES" instead of cities, "TRASPORT" instead of transport, "IMPORVING" instead of improving, and using awkward phrasing like "a vital role to address shortage of housing problems" instead of shortages. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a vocabulary profile that requires more precision and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses introduced by words like "because" and "if". There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ("in small areas", "best solution"), subject-verb agreement issues ("cities like Singapore has"), and incorrect prepositional use in patterns ("living outside city centres having convenient access"). Despite these errors in grammar and punctuation, they rarely impede communication, and the sentence structures show sufficient variety alongside a mix of accurate and faulty complex constructions.
