IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The effecitve way to provide adequate shelters in urban areas is to construct large apartment buildings. I completely agree with the statement because tall buildings can house large number of families and can provide proper management of services in the same place.
By constructing tall buildings, we can provide enough shelter to families in large number because building apartments of higher levels can help many families to stay in the same place without creating new structures. For example, if a 20-storied apartment building can house 20 families then by making a 50-storied building more families will come and stay without moving to various locations. As a result, building a high-storied apartment is beneficial.
Apartment buildings with higher levels is better as various services can be easily provided and managed in a single location. Managing facilities such as water, electricity and transportation can be a hassle when homes are situated in various places but when multiple homes are in the same building providing such facilities can be easier. For instance, it is hard to provided water facilities for people who are living in different locations but when they are living in the same building it is easier to provide water without any difficulties. Consequently, management can be easier in large housing units.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that in order to provide required homes in city areas it is advantageous to create tall housing units as it can provide enough spaces for families to live in as well as better managment of services can be done.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position agreeing with the statement. Relevant ideas are presented, such as the ability of tall buildings to house a large number of families and simplify the management of utilities like water and electricity. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, and parts of the discussion feel repetitive, such as the continuous restatement of housing many families in one structure. To reach a higher level, the ideas need to be more fully extended and supported with deeper analysis or more specific real-world examples rather than generalized statements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
There is a coherent overall arrangement to the essay, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing specific points, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'For example', 'As a result', and 'In conclusion'. However, cohesion can sometimes feel mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is occasionally basic. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as housing capacity versus service management. To move up, the logical links between sentences and paragraphs need to be smoother and less reliant on formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases like 'urban areas', 'adequate shelters', and 'housing units'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'effecitve' instead of effective, 'shelters' instead of housing, and 'high-storied' or 'higher levels' which sound slightly unnatural in collocation. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect the limitations of this level. To improve, the writer needs to expand their range of less common lexical items and refine word choices and collocations for greater precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional or result clauses like 'when homes are situated in various places but when multiple homes are...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('house large number of families') and preposition issues ('provided water facilities for people'), but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To achieve a higher band, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with a higher proportion of error-free sentences and improved control over articles and prepositions.
