Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often asserted that big cities should build tall apartments to provide enough homes. However, I strongly disagree with this statement.
Although, these buildings can provide home to many families but they have to make certain compromises to own that house. The first one includes the older genration which may find it difficult to go down and up from their home regularly. Staying in the house all day without any social interaction can incur several problems in them including diabetes and depression. Also, children have very less space to play and enjoy with thier friends in these apartements. It will affect their mental and physical health. A survey conducted by Ministry of Planning and Development Pakistan, in which they asked people about the quality of life from in these huge buildings and in their own houses. The results showed that people living in thier own houses have a slightly better quality of life compared to the residents of tall buildings.
These buildings, no doubt save space for the other projects to be executed on the remaining land but they have to adjust to low spaced apartments often not enough for large families. Parks can be made around these buildings but they are of no value when their residents especially older people cannot arrive and spend time in them.
In conclusion, these tall buildings save space for more projects at the cost of adjustment in a tiny apartment where the older people will stay all day and children cannot play. Due to these firm arguments, I strongly disagree with the idea of making tall buildings in the cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position against tall apartment blocks. The main ideas are relevant, focusing on the social and health impacts on older generations and children, as well as citing a survey. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the reference to the survey lacks specific data or elaboration to strengthen the argument. While the position is maintained throughout, the supporting points tend to over-generalise slightly, keeping the development at a level where certain arguments feel somewhat restricted rather than fully explored.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance established in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct points, such as the impacts on different age groups and the comparison of living spaces. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, with transitional devices like 'Also' and referencing phrases that lack smooth integration. While logical organisation is generally maintained, the connections between sentences could be more fluid to achieve a higher level of progression throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'social interaction', 'mental and physical health', and 'projects to be executed'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as 'provide home to many families' instead of 'homes', 'genration' (spelling), 'very less space' instead of 'little space', 'apartements' (spelling), and 'low spaced apartments'. These lexical errors and awkward collocations do not impede communication, but they restrict the precision and flexibility required for higher scoring bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination with structures like 'Although these buildings can provide...' and 'A survey conducted by... in which they asked...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('from Ministry of Planning'), preposition errors ('quality of life from in these huge buildings'), and minor fragment issues within the survey sentence where the main verb is missing. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and the basic sentence patterns are generally under control.
