Student answer (Band 6.0)
Migration rates are increasing in today's time whether it is from small village to metropolitan city or from a developing country to a developed country. Better lifestyle is one of the reasons why people migrate. Thus, it increases urban population in cities. This is the why now cities are facing problems to acomodate all the people. With less resources and less area given, cities are now expanding vertically rather than horizontally. I completely agree with the statement that the best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.
One of the major advantages of expanding vertically firstly, is that the surrounding areas can be used for other purposes like farming. Due to continuous urban growth, areas used for agriculture are turning to living spaces. The impact of this situation is deforestation, global warming and increase in atmospheric temperatures. To avoid it, the only solution is construct tall buildings. For example. Mumbai in India has built a lot of tall buildings rather than expanding sideways.
Secondly, the shared spaces not only help to manage waste effectively but also distribute water equally. Apartments constructed near malls, metro stations, etc can help public gain access facilities. If the expansion occurs horizontally, the government might not be able to provide everything to each area. For example, townships are created where all facilities like mall, hospital, school ,gardens ,temples are provided to a lot of people. For example, Adani Shantigram located in Ahmedabad, India provides such township to people and manges hundreds of family together. This also decreases in number of people using private vehicles which helps reduce emissions as all facilities are easy to access. For example, Tokyo, Japan where people travel via metros more rather than personal vehicles.
Thus, using land efficiently and managing resources in cities especially densely populated, vertical apartments are the best way to provide homes to residents.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear and well-defined position throughout in full agreement with the prompt. The overall argument is relevant, and the writer successfully outlines both environmental and urban planning justifications for building tall apartment blocks, citing specific examples such as Mumbai and Tokyo. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. While the advantages concerning agricultural land preservation and township facilities are explored with examples, the discussion remains somewhat general in places, preventing the response from reaching a higher band. The introduction successfully sets up the thesis, and the conclusion succinctly reiterates the main stance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introductory thesis to body paragraphs supporting vertical expansion, and finally to a concise conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct points, such as land preservation and shared community facilities. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or repetitive, particularly with the frequent use of transitional phrases like 'For example' and 'Secondly'. Referencing is generally adequate, but occasional rough transitions between sentences mean that the flow could be smoother to achieve a fully seamless reading experience.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and successfully attempts less common lexical items such as 'metropolitan city', 'vertically rather than horizontally', and 'densely populated'. While communication is never impeded, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher rating, such as 'acomodate' instead of accommodate, 'turn to' instead of turn into, and 'manges' instead of manages. Collocations are generally acceptable, though some phrases lack precision. The vocabulary used serves the communicative purpose well enough, but greater control over spelling and word forms is needed for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response makes use of a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and conditional structures. There are some errors in grammar, articles, and punctuation throughout the text, such as missing articles ('To avoid it, the only solution is construct tall buildings' instead of 'to construct') and minor prepositional slips like 'increase in atmospheric temperatures'. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the argument. Control of basic sentence structures is solid, but a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences combined with stricter punctuation control is required to reach the next band.
