IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that the cities should construct tall apartment blocks to provide enough homes. In my view, i completely agree with this opinion because building tall apartments will reduce housing pressure and also consume less space than independent houses.

One reason for this is individuals from rural areas are migrating to cities for job opportunites, which is causing housing issues because metropolitan cities are often populated. Consequently, developing tall residential blocks would solve housing crisis and maintain overpopulated urban areas. For instance, Government of USA is implementing a plan to utilize free spaces to build tall apartment blocks to control over population. Therefore, authorities should commence the future planning of developing high rise buildings for accommodating the increasing public.

Furthermore, Governments should encourage public to construct high rise apartments rather than villas or mansions to prevent shortage of accommodation. For example, Australia is facing severe housing issues because of independent build houses resulting in authorities to implement apartment structural plan. Moreover, policy makers should occupy the risk-free spaces which are best for construction because area with high chances of floods and disasters are not safe for the public. Therefore, using better urban spaces for developing would maximise the control of overpopulace and stablize the economy of respective countries.

In conclusion, while there are several problems related to housing in all over the world, but providing homes in the form of tall residential apartment blocks would not only reduces housing crises, but also consume less spaces than owned houses.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position agreeing with the prompt. The overall argument is relevant, and the main ideas are extended to some extent, meeting the requirements of the lower band. However, some ideas are under-developed or supported with vague examples, preventing a higher score. For instance, the mention of the United States Government implementing a plan to utilize free spaces is stated too broadly without specific context, and the Australian housing issue example lacks detailed elaboration. To reach the next level, the writer needs to provide more fully developed explanations and more precise, concrete examples that directly support the central arguments without relying on generalized statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from introduction to conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct main points, and basic cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or somewhat repetitive, and referencing can occasionally be unclear, which reflects characteristics of the current band level. For example, transitional phrases feel slightly formulaic rather than smoothly integrated into the text. To achieve a higher score, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing between sentences is seamless and unobtrusive throughout the entire response.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'metropolitan', 'urban areas', and 'overpopulated'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form. For instance, the phrase 'housing crisis' is used, but there are awkward formulations such as 'housing issues because of independent build houses' and 'overpopulace' instead of overpopulation. Spelling and word choice errors occur, though they generally do not impede communication. To move to a higher band, the writer must incorporate a wider, more flexible range of sophisticated lexical items with precise collocation and maintain strict accuracy in word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as subordinate clauses introduced by 'because' and 'while'. However, there are some persistent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include missing articles ('cities should construct', 'Government of USA'), incorrect capitalization and pronoun usage ('i completely agree'), and prepositions or word forms within grammatical patterns ('job opportunites', 'reduces housing crises' instead of reduce). These are typical errors that rarely impede communication entirely. To progress further, the writer needs to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences while maintaining complex structures with reliable control over punctuation, articles, and subject-verb agreement.
