Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that the efficient way to provide large number residential appartement in mega cities is to construct the high rise buildings. While some people may have a different view, I agree with the statement because it provides the maximum homes for large population and also allows the efficient use of value able land for other purposes.
To begin with, the main reason why I agree is that big cities have limited land and large population, so there is need to utilize the land carefully. The high rise housing complex can be constructed on small area, having many appartements which can accommodate many families in same building. However, construction of detached houses for individuals is not practical approach because it will cause the unrestricted expansion of cities. For instance, Islamabad is a planned city ,there are many tall residential blocks in which different families are living.
Another important reason is that metropolitan cities also required free land to construct roads, schools, hospitals, and other essential amenities. So there is need to planed the development of the different sectors properly. A good example of this can be seen in Singapore, where many tall and huge housing blocks have constructed because of the shortage of land. Transport stations ,schools, market and hospitals were also developed by utilizing land properly.
In conclusion, I agree that making large complexes in mega cities is the practical approach to accommodate large number of individuals in densely populated areas. It also provide room for the development of other facilities in particular area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position agreeing with the statement and maintaining it throughout the essay. The main ideas are relevant and supported, such as discussing land scarcity and the need for public amenities like schools and hospitals in Singapore and Islamabad. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven; certain points, like the mention of Islamabad, are introduced but not fully elaborated, which is characteristic of the half-band achievement here. To reach a higher level, the student should expand further on specific consequences and provide more thoroughly developed examples rather than relying on brief mentions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct reason supporting the writer's position, such as land utilization and public infrastructure. Cohesive devices are employed, including transitional phrases like 'To begin with' and 'Another important reason'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical or repetitive, and some links between sentences lack complete fluidity. To move up, the writer could enhance the variety and subtlety of cohesive devices to make the flow between ideas more natural and unobtrusive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the writer's meaning with an acceptable range of terms related to urban development, such as 'metropolitan cities', 'infrastructure', and 'densely populated areas'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'residential appartement', 'value able land', 'practical approach', and 'high rise housing complex', alongside some spelling issues. The student attempts some less common vocabulary but lacks precise control over collocation and word form. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their lexical range and eliminate errors in spelling and word formation to ensure greater precision and naturalness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct compound and subordinate clauses, as seen in sentences using 'While some people...' and 'because of the shortage of land'. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors present, such as article omissions ('there is need', 'shortage of land'), incorrect verb forms ('have constructed' instead of 'have been constructed'), and minor punctuation spacing issues. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede overall communication. To attain a higher band, the writer should increase the proportion of error-free complex structures and exercise tighter control over articles, passive voice constructions, and subject-verb agreement.
