Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, a major issue all over the world is the increasing population in the cities. One solution to this is building tall apartment blocks to save space and ultimately the land. I strongly agree with this proposition as it offers environmental and societal benefits.

First and foremost, increased number of households in the cities mean coverage of more land. This can results in decreasing landscape of the forests thus, contributing to pollution and climate change. Tall buildings with apartments can help with comparatively lesser size of land occupied for houses preventing deforestation. Furthermore, this can increase space for transportation, reducing the traffic jams on the roads. Therefore, reducing the noise levels in large cities contributing to reduced noise pollution.

Secondly, people get distant from markets, hospitals and other amenities of life. Apartments can increase interaction between people as it brings them closer. Additionally providing them with ease of access to their daily essentials. For example a bulding with apartments can have multiple sevrvices too like gym, saunas, supermarkets etc., so people don't have to travel accros the city to buy their daily necessities. They can just go down a floor and buy what they need. Living in the same building also results in increased interaction with neighbours and thus people stay connected.

In conclusion, building tall apartment blocks has environmental advantages in addition to building lively communities. Thus, in my opinion this is a very viable solution to managing increasing population by providing homes that do not disturb the other habitats

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position throughout in favor of building tall apartment blocks. The main ideas are extended and supported well, such as discussing both environmental advantages regarding land preservation and societal benefits regarding community living. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in parts, such as claiming that tall buildings automatically reduce traffic jams without deeper exploration of urban transit dynamics. The arguments presented are relevant and adequately cover the scope of the prompt, maintaining a consistent focus on the prompt question from the introduction through to the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the essay. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from an introduction of the stance to environmental points, societal points, and finally a summarizing conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as 'First and foremost', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion'. However, there are minor issues with referencing and linking in sentences like 'This can results in decreasing landscape', where cohesion feels slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes, contributing to an overall coherent and easy-to-follow text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to communicate ideas clearly. The writer attempts some less common lexical items, such as 'proposition', 'amenities', and 'habitat', demonstrating some awareness of style. However, there are several lexical errors in word choice, spelling, and word form that prevent a higher score, such as 'servvices' instead of services, 'accros' instead of across, and awkward phrasing like 'decreasing landscape'. Despite these occasional errors and misspellings, the meaning remains clear and communication is not impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, articles, and agreement that characterize this level. Examples include 'increased number of households... mean coverage' (subject-verb agreement error), 'This can results in' (incorrect verb form after a modal), and missing articles in phrases like 'with multiple sevrvices too like gym'. Punctuation and preposition use also show inconsistency. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they persist throughout the text and restrict the structural accuracy.
