Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is argued that high-rise building can be great option to accomodate thousands of people in metropolitian cities as it helps to offer affordable housing option and prevent outskirt agricultural land turning into concerete jungle. I firmly agree with this notion and will explain how it is good for society in this essay.
Those who criticised construction of apartment often argued that it has safety issues. Because a large number of individuals living in single area may face some serious challanges such as fire safety and old building redevelopment issues. For example, if developer who build multi-storey housing scheme did not install enough emergency exits when any house caught fire, residents will be trapped and struggled to escape from that area.
However, I largerly support this view of developing skyscrapper where hundreds of people can stay together, mainly due to it provides cheaper home. This is because tall apartment consumes less amount of land, and accomodate hugh number of people, resulting significant decline in purchasing cost. Examples can be seen in private home where owner often pays high cost in buying plot and building house, this cost reduced substantially in flat. Another reason to support this phenomenon is that it helps to control damage on agricultural land, which is located in outskirt of cities. If people continued to build their separate home, they would be forced to aquire farming area as urban areas are facing lack of land due to high density of populations.
To conclude, building tall apartment urban area plays significant role in saving envrionment and cntrolling cost

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear, consistent position throughout in favour of tall apartment blocks. The main ideas are relevant, such as housing affordability and protecting agricultural land from urban sprawl, which shows that parts of the higher band are already present. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or lack specific extension. For example, the counter-argument regarding safety issues is introduced in the second paragraph but is not fully explored before transitioning to the writer's supporting arguments. Similarly, the discussion on agricultural land touches upon important points about urban density, but the explanation could benefit from more detailed examples or broader consequences to fully satisfy the requirements of a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion, indicating a logical structure. Information and ideas are generally presented in a sequence that makes sense to the reader. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Cohesive devices are used, but referencing is not always clear, such as in sentences where pronoun use is limited or slightly awkward. Paragraphing is present, but the final conclusion is incomplete and lacks a full stop, which affects the overall sense of progression and editorial polish. To reach the next level, the writer needs to ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs, making the logical relationships between ideas more transparent without relying on repetitive connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'metropolitian', 'skyscrapper', and 'urban sprawl' contexts, which shows ambition. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors that occur throughout the text, including 'accomodate', 'outskirt', 'concerete', 'challanges', 'largerly', 'hugh', 'envrionment', and 'cntrolling'. While these errors do not severely impede communication and allow the reader to grasp the main points, they prevent the lexical score from rising higher. To improve, the writer should focus on expanding control over common spelling patterns and ensuring that word forms and collocations are used more accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response makes use of a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'if developer who build multi-storey housing scheme did not install...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('developer who build', 'in flat'), subject-verb agreement issues ('tall apartment consumes', 'result significant decline'), and missing punctuation marks like the final period of the essay. Nonetheless, these errors rarely impede communication, and the meaning of the sentences remains largely clear. To achieve a higher band, the writer should aim for greater control over complex sentence structures, ensuring that verb forms, pluralisation, and article usage are consistently accurate across all sentences.
