Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is one of the widely discussed topic now days that to provide enough homes in large cities we have to build tall buildings.I strongly disagree with this statement as building tall buidings has many negative impact has a negative impact on the quality of life and it is not convienent to build these buildings as they are more prone to natural disasters.

Firstly Building tall building apartment in the cities will socially isolate a person.Although it has rules and regulations, people wil not be able to engage with each other.Living in part a person forgets how nature exactly look like as it makes him feel living in the cage of concrete building without any emotions. For instance one of my friend living in the apartment in gulberg he always said that living there is just like a cage as all you see is just a butch of buildings and cars and these thoughts are sometimes saffocating. As a result his mental health is declining and his creativity is stop.

Secondly,The thought of living in the tall building is sometimes looks great but its not like what it seems as tall building has the highest chances to hit by natural disasters. As the tall building is made to accomodate a large proportion of people however it safety is sometimes neglected. For example

few days back i was reading an article about the earthquake in japan which caused a vast amount of destruction in the area and all the buidlings has collapsed. One of the major highlight in that article was the safety of the people are compromised they dont have any emergency feature or anything

and it also accomodate more people than its capacity.Consequently a vast amount of human lives are lost and unbearable damage has done to the area.

In conclusion, I strongly disagree with this statement and i think the government should think about its alternative as the ecosystem is kept changing so we have to prepare ourselves for these disasters and take precautions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position against tall apartment blocks, supporting this view with reasons related to social isolation and safety concerns. However, the development of these ideas remains somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, the point about social isolation is introduced but shifts quickly into an anecdote about a friend in Gulberg, which lacks broader analysis. Similarly, the example regarding natural disasters in Japan is generalised and lacks precise connection to the structural engineering of tall residential blocks. The position is visible throughout the essay, but the arguments rely heavily on personal assertions rather than fully elaborated societal impacts, placing the content squarely within a partial and somewhat restricted treatment of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays some basic organisation, utilizing standard paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. However, there is no clear overall progression across the text as a whole. Cohesive devices are often inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' without smooth transitional phrasing between sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion fails at times due to abrupt shifts in ideas, such as moving from mental health to architectural safety. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen with ambiguous pronouns like 'it' and 'they' referring back to distant nouns. To achieve higher cohesion, the writer needs to improve sentence-to-sentence links and ensure the logical flow between ideas is tightly managed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical range demonstrated is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic points about housing and urban environments. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'socially isolate', 'ecosystem', and 'precautions', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling, such as 'convienent', 'buidings', 'saffocating', and 'stop' instead of 'stopped'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors sometimes cause difficulty for the reader and impede the natural flow of communication. To improve this criterion, the student needs to expand their vocabulary repertoire, pay closer attention to word formation, and ensure accurate spelling of common academic and topic-specific terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer uses a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple clauses alongside frequent attempts at complex sentences that are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including missing articles ('in gulberg', 'in tall building'), punctuation errors (missing spaces after full stops and commas), and subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'building tall building apartment... will socially isolate'). Clauses are often strung together incorrectly without appropriate punctuation or conjunctions. While the basic meaning can usually be deciphered, the high frequency of grammatical slips and punctuation lapses causes noticeable difficulty for the reader and restricts the text to a basic structural level.
