Student answer (Band 6.0)

The rapid growth of population, has increased an urgent need of additional housing in many large cities. I strongly fav some people argue that best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks. I strongly belive the view point that building tall apartments can be helpful only when balanced approach with proper horizontal housing and urban planning is followed.

The strong argument to the statement is that building vertical house can reduce overuse of precious urban land that further can be used for making schools, parks, hospitals, etc. urban land is astronomical and scarce, tall apartments helps to give better living place to a hundred limited area and it provides cost-friendly experience of living. However providing tall basic facilities like school, parks, hospitals, keeps to reduce distance making that leads to less congestion on roads and helps in more interesting use of public transport by people rather than personal vehicles. it benefits both environment and time by reducing populatio pollution and traffic on roads respectively.

Moreover, building tall apartments is not the only solution. vertical housing favours small families to live in a limited space whereas it don't always favours all the families especially Joint families. more people accomodate at a single area results in putting pressure on muncipal cooperation which leads to blocked sewage, congestion on roads, scarcity of water to the houses, etc. it results in demanding extra care of buildings and public system that low-resi earning residents can't afford. conversely horizontal housing provides more space to families and more affordable public systems limiting traffic in a particular time area.

To conclude, building tall apartment helps in accomodating more families in a limited area reducing scarcity of land but it comes up with it is own issues like increased stress on muncipality, more traffic at particular area. therefore it is not only solution to fix the problems in large cities. balanced approach must be taken where building horizontal and vertical apartments is neccessary along with proper urban planning and fulfilling the requirements of public system.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position throughout the essay. The writer successfully discusses the benefits of tall apartment blocks, such as saving urban land and reducing infrastructure distances, while also addressing limitations like the pressure on municipal systems and unsuitability for joint families. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the discussion on municipal pressure in the third paragraph is slightly repetitive and lacks deeper extension. The response fully satisfies the requirements for the lower band while showing glimpses of the next by sustaining a clear position and addressing both sides of the issue, although some supporting arguments remain somewhat general rather than thoroughly explored.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

There is a coherent overall arrangement to the essay, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs exploring distinct facets of the prompt, and a conclusion. Information and ideas are logically sequenced, guiding the reader through the writer's stance. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, seen in transitions like 'The strong argument to the statement' and awkward referencing such as 'it results in demanding extra care'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate main ideas, but paragraph internal cohesion could be smoother. The progression of ideas is occasionally hindered by abrupt shifts between sentences, preventing the response from achieving a higher level of seamless logical flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'astronomical', 'cost-friendly', and 'horizontal housing'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as 'populatio pollution' (typographical and lexical slip), 'vertical house', 'low-resi earning residents', and 'muncipal cooperation'. Spelling errors and word formation slips occur, including 'fav' instead of favour, 'belive', and 'neccessary'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score because control over less common vocabulary lacks precision and consistency, keeping the writing firmly within the range of adequate competence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambition in sentence structures. However, frequent errors in grammar and punctuation are present throughout the text. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('tall apartments helps'), missing articles ('is not only solution'), punctuation errors like comma splices ('The rapid growth of population, has increased', 'urban land is astronomical and scarce, tall apartments helps'), and awkward prepositional or clause patterns. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they occur with enough frequency to impact readability and prevent the grammar control from reaching a higher level of accuracy. The sentence structures often contain flaws when complexity is attempted.
